About this deal

I love the surrealness of the underwater landscapes of a river I thought I knew really well. Now I know it even better. Being waterproof down to 15 metres makes the TG-6 ideal for capturing shots while holding the camera underwater.

In fact, the first thing I did with it when I got it was throw it in a pool. (Not being used to waterproof cameras, I gotta say that was much harder to do than one would think!!) Its waterproof, drop-proof, crushproof and freeze-proof qualities aside, on first inspection the TG-6 doesn’t offer a massive amount more than those non-toughened compacts of old, the kind that smartphones gradually wiped out.

When the mode dial is already set to (Microscope mode), press the arrow pad Left button to select other sub modes. I’m mostly a still photographer, so I just tried out the most basic of video features. Nothing was better than my smartphone, but since I was using the TG-6 in situations where I didn’t want to risk my smartphone, it was a fair trade-off. The battery is rated for 340 shots by CIPA standards, but I found that you'll get a bit less than that in practice if you utilize the GPS and Wi-Fi features. Thankfully, you can recharge via USB, so it's easy enough to top off while on the go—assuming you don't mind carrying a power bank in addition to a point-and-shoot.

I see this is as a bad thing. It's easy enough to go into your iPhone notifications and turn them off—and I recommend you do so if buy a TG-6. But it shouldn't be an issue in the first place—Olympus should know better than to turn a utility app into an advertising platform. Speed and Autofocus The TG-6 is a pretty standard point-and-shoot from a handling perspective. Its handgrip is decently deep, and the camera ships with a cloth wrist strap that you can use on land and under water.

Like a wilderness travel guide, the TG-6 pulls you into the micro world, under the water, and down deeper trails than you would ever take your clunky DSLR down. You can trust the Olympus Tough TG-6 out in the wild because it’s built strong and made for adventure. It’s even tough enough to let your kids use it. There's an accessory ring around the lens. Olympus sells a couple of fish-eye lenses, if you want to get a wider angle of view, as well as a pair of flash accessories that redirect light to surround the lens, filling in shadows in close-up shots. The TG-6 has an especially good macro feature, and I'd consider one of the light modifiers a necessary accessory.
