About this deal

Working at Warner Bros Records and already a fan of the band at the time, Maddocks had an opportunity to work with Deftones on their third album, White Pony, which was recorded in part in LA, where Maddocks lives. Though they may have courted controversy in the past, there's no denying that Gore is the sound of a band firing on all cylinders.

But now, Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez are already back with even more music: their incredible second album Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete. The one for 1999's Significant Other is their most recognizable, featuring a hooded microphone assassin donning Fred Durst's notorious red Yankees cap and striking a mean pose. A reunited No Doubt will play this April’s Coachella, while elsewhere the massive line-up features Deftones, Taking Back Sunday, Lil Uzi Vert, Militarie Gun and loads more. They were having this after-hours party with all these chicks hanging out in the Jacuzzi," he explains.Deftones were one of the first bands to experiment with using heavy guitars and distorted vocals to create a more atmospheric and emotive sound, and Adrenaline is seen as the blueprint for this style of music. Pushing the boundary of what is expected or assumed is a hallmark of both the design and the sound of Deftones' records. Deftones is an American rock band whose members include Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Sergio Vega, Frank Delgado, and Abe Cunningham. On a nerdier level, the showcase of their canine mascot draws a direct comparison to Lou Dog, the Dalmation owned by the late Sublime singer Bradley Nowell — that band was clearly an influence on the reggae-inflected, Cali-punk-adjacent nu-metal that Snot excelled in. Given all the teasing they’ve been doing lately, this is not much of a surprise… but it’s still exciting!

Since then, Deftones has released eight more studio albums, with every single one receiving critical acclaim. Her name is Lisa Hughes, and 20 years after the album came out, Pousta tracked her down and interviewed her a little bit about the album cover. Sometimes when I hear music I see color, and when it came time to work on the artwork for this batch of songs, I knew exactly what I wanted. It was a fitting tribute to Chi Cheng and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, art can still thrive. Thank photographer Rick Kosick, who had made a reputation for himself at the now-defunct skate mag Big Brother and went on to become a cameraman for the MTV series Jackass and Wild Boyz.

It’s still a Deftones record—we didn’t really have any new influences that changed that—but it’s an expansion of what we were comfortable with. Some user-contributed text on this page is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License; additional terms may apply. Every Deftones album cover is visually compelling, but the strange allure of 1997's Around the Fur makes it arguably their most striking. The longer you stare into the eyes of the "butterfly sugar baby" herself, the more credibility the latter achieves. In a genre that is often mired in conservatism, White Pony is a vital reminder that artistry and experimentation are always worth pursuing. Co-created with visual artist Frank Maddocks (known for designing many Deftones covers, including White Pony), the band wanted to convey a convergence of militarism (the soldier) and emotionality (the dragonfly wings), and the intentional layering of the image — it looks like the handiwork of numerous graffiti artists — channels the many dualities of the music itself, which pushed and pulled between heavy, catchy, angry and heartfelt.

The photo itself was shot by Rick Kosick, the skate photographer who went on to become part of the Jackass crew through his work at Big Brother Skateboard Magazine. In the present day, the cover star's been identified as a middle-aged medical worker from the Pacific Northwest who's still proud of her association with the group.

Deftones' 1997 album Around The Fur features a woman looking at something out of frame despite the fact that she's the main focus of the album cover. In particular, copies of the images could not be used to make illegal copies of the album artwork on another sound carrier. If you look at the title and the artwork it’s about a juxtaposition that, for me, is very beautiful. They are not replaceable with uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted images of comparable educational value. The scantily-clad subject from the front of the pioneering nu-metal band's 1997 album has become an iconic figure for Deftones fans.
