England and Englishness are central to Bodies - it's essentially a story of identity and culture. I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say that this not really a murder mystery at all, and the corpse, reappearing in the same location to different people at different times - people whose speech and thoughts carry occasional echoes of one another - has a symbolic significance to England. Edmond was my favorite with his bizarre secrets and even if the events in his time period were just as twisted as the others, it seemed somehow less flummoxing. Karl just comes across as an asshat who dresses the best. Shahara worked as a different, strong woman who didn't take crap from her co-workers but retained a sense of humor. I detested the annoying Maplewood - she and the other characters in 2050 irked me.I think the double H could be a reference to double helix which is the term given to double-stranded molecules like DNA. This ties into our bodies but also the main theme of the book: what makes up our national character. I should say this is a very British comic as Spencer seems to be focusing specifically on multiculturalism and cultural identity in Britain through his characters.

Four detectives, four different eras, one murder victim, same MO, same location - appearing to each detective. Who killed John Bull? Bodies on Netflix is based on the mind-bending graphic novel by Si Spencer, with the same name. The comic was released in 2015, and Si Spencer teamed up with four different illustrators, each of which gave each time frame its unique feel. As well as his work as an author, Si was also a scriptwriter, and during his career worked on shows such as Grange Hill, EastEnders and The Bill. Netflix’s Bodies will likely continue in the same vein, as a very stylized project, in the hands of director Marco Kreutzpaintner who is known for 2018’s thriller Beat as well as the sci-fi romance, Soulmates, from 2020. Also directing is Doctor Who’s Haolu Wang, a Chinese writer and director whose intensely psychological and emotional works include the award-winning The Pregnant Ground from 2019. Writers for the series include Torchwood’s Paul Tomalin (who is also an executive producer for the show) along with Gangs of London’s Danusia Samal.The title is not descriptive. Well, there ARE four bodies, but this is about ideas, not bodies. Murdered bodies, okay, but it's what gets these bodies murdered that the book is about. If it's REALLY about bodies in some metaphysical sense, then it is too esoterically configured here. Some of his other graphic novels include The Vinyl Underground with Simon Gane and Hellblazer: City of Demons with Sean Murphy. The officers are all investigating the murder of one unidentified male, found naked on a London street, killed by a single bullet to the eye but, mysteriously there’s no exit wound. Whiteman’s unpleasant journey from the claws of the Nazis to setting himself up as a detective on-the-make in blitzed London is also interesting to see, though he’s very easily the most dislikeable figure in the group. Hasan’s storyline exploring race tensions in contemporary London through the prism of a young woman struggling with reconciling her two cultural identities as a Londoner and a Muslim in a difficult field like detective work is fascinating. I wrote the pilot and he passed away just after the script was green-lit, so I was very much robbed of the chance to speak to him more about it.

For me, it was not a one star read, definitely not the worst I've read, but also definitely not as good as I had anticipated based on the cover. In June 2014, Vertigo published the first issue of his creator-owned monthly eight issue limited series Bodies. This graphic novel is a multi-threaded time travel murder mystery of sorts. It has many mythological aspects and delves into the ideas of secret societies, ancient texts and even manages to rope in bog bodies. The narrative is exceptionally complex and at times, honestly, is beyond total comprehension. I was able to unravel the overarching concept of the book but many of the details simply escaped me completely. The limited series was published monthly until 2015 by DC/Vertigo, with Spencer teaming up with four different illustrators. Spencer has also written for television. After winning a 'New Voices' competition with the play Tracey and Lewis, he secured a position at the BBC as script editor on prime-time cop show City Central. He later worked as a staff writer for the BBC's EastEnders and ITV's The Bill in addition to being storyliner and series editor and contributing scripts to Grange Hill. He was credited as script editor on the 2009 Aardman pilot for CBBC show Men in Coats.The story is quite convoluted, but there is a clear maturity to it. It jumps between points in time that have no real connection, so you are effectively reading four wildly different stories featuring original characters in believable settings, each drawn in its own style. Bottom line is that the story is good, but you have to be a fan of this particular niche of supernatural. I'm sure it can be argued that the flow of the story could have been handled differently to make it more accessible for the ordinary reader.
