It has aromas of vanilla, dark chocolate, orange and cinnamon and flavours of dark chocolate, candied citrus fruits, coffee and nutmeg.This may be the pinnacle of the age-stated Dalmore releases, as far as I’m concerned—a glorious synergy between the initial 14 years of bourbon barrel aging, and then 4 additional years in Matusalem oloroso sherry casks. You certainly aren’t missing the sherried nature on the nose here, but it transitions on the palate into deep toffee, with some of the same cocoa/coffee character found in The Cigar Malt, albeit sweeter and richer, rather than the somewhat sharper roastiness of the previous dram. Bottled at a slightly stronger 43% ABV (86 proof) than the 12 or 15-year expressions, The Dalmore 18 is a memorable affair. Splendidly sherried Highland single malt, brimming with candied citrus, dark chocolate, coffee, and spice. There’s also a red fruity presence my nose is registering as faint strawberry, which I wasn’t getting before in the 12.

Dalmore might just be the most legendary distillery in the world, when it comes to creating stunning whisky with real provenance. My journey northward through the Principal Collection line now has me making a stop at The Dalmore 18-year-old release. V. The notes of orange, vanilla, red fruit and salted caramel are quite pleasant, but tasting this, I’m missing the more punchy profile of the Dalmore 18. The 2022 edition sees the Highland single malt matured in a combination of American oak bourbon casks and finished in Matusalem oloroso sherry casks from renowned sherry producer, González Byass.

Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. A relationship with the González Byass sherry house has resulted in an exclusive selection of 30-year-old Matusalem oloroso sherry butts being provided to The Dalmore. I find this very interesting since this is the third bottle over 3 years and this last one is the worst of all.This was distilled in January 1990 and rested in a bourbon cask for 27 years before being bottled in September 2017 at 46% ABV. Single malt from the Dalmore distillery, initially aged in American white oak casks before enjoying a finishing period in Port pipes. All sherry is fortified with neutral grape spirit after fermentation and will always be at least three years old. On the nose, this one is unsurprisingly a bit more on the fruity and vinous side, although I still get plenty of pure citrus as well, with an orange essential oil-like intensity that pairs nicely with biscuity, shortbread-like maltiness.
