About this deal

After Isadora’s aunt was found to be the one attempting to hurt her family, none of the characters except Isadora cared at all and let her go about like nothing happened. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we’d choose anyway. When the opportunity presents itself to move from Egypt to San Diego, to live with her brother for a while, naturally she jumps on the chance to do so. Maybe it's wrong for me to question things when I read, but I want some explanation besides the facts you found about Ancient Egyptian mythology Wikipedia. Supporting characters such as Ry are flat and two-dimensional, and the danger to Isis is not compelling enough to catch readers up.

When she realized that her mom does love her in her own way and that they had their own misunderstanding.

It was cute enough, but this book is just so short that they barely have enough time to flesh out the relationship, and that's saying something given most of the book revolves around them.

Isadora is happy about this because her mother has decided to have another baby four years before her typical pattern. I usually like a more “campy” feel but I guess I couldn’t quite get the right note while reading it. I have never pictured a world where the Gods are still living, have children, and deal with things like sibling rivalry and redecorating bedrooms. Sixteen-year-old Isadora talks a bit like a spoiled California teen, but she doesn’t actually become one until her mother sends her to San Diego to keep her safe. There is casual mention and jokes about certain body parts and bad behavior on the part of the gods—which is all part of the Egyptian mythos—but it might make some readers uncomfortable. I knew he especially would be important because during Isadora's Isis rebellion in San Diego, she cuts and dyes her hair. Isadora's sick of living a life where she's only worthy of a passing glance, and when she's offered the chance to move thousands of miles away, she jumps on it. And in my mission to read everything by her, I came across this book that I bought awhile ago but never sat down and read. At the beginning of each chapter, there was a snippet that seemed to be a history of the Gods themselves, but sometimes Isadora would appear in them, unnamed, and that confused me.

That quote made me seek out the novel, devour the trilogy in a weekend, and thus fall in love with White’s writing. There she meets Tyler, a girl who turns out to be something she never thought she would ever have: a BFF. Because I love this child for being mine, but I also love him for the being he will be, and I can't tell you how excited I am to watch him discover that for himself. It has all the elements of a contemporary romance, with the added interest of a little magic thrown in.

I thought Isadora was a little spoiled and naïve, but I am glad that she does become more appreciative by the end of the book. This beautiful cover got me and the name and time period in which it was published had me confusing it with These Broken Stars. I knew something was going to happen with the dreams and I knew that Ry was some kind of "human child of a god" as well. And of course because this is YA she's guaranteed a man-cessory who helps her break that hard bitchy exterior of hers (he doesn't, despite what White says). With the help of her aunt, she manages to convince her mother that it would be safer for her to go live with her brother in California for a little while. I only wish that she elaborated more on the mystery of whatever evil sinister plot was involved than having the story fall flat until the ending. Ry mentioned he had a girlfriend in HS, but he broke up with her b/c he wasn’t feeling it and she became a crazy ex.
