About this deal

I saw this book at university. And it felt like I should finally get a handle on my far-away mind. This book was sitting on one of those temporarily constructed stands at the library. I probably ruined the spread, loaning it but I felt it could fulfil a deep need. With the right practice, I’m certain mindfulness will deliver.

Her next mission is to create walk-in centres for people with mental health issues. ‘There’s not enough support; there aren’t enough shrinks,’ she says. ‘It helps to know you’re not alone.’ Ruby Wax’s 3 minute technique to feel less frazzled After the mindfulness exercise, all attendees can unmute themselves and talk about how they are feeling, or to borrow one of Ruby’s expressions, ‘explain what the weather conditions are like in your head’. Again, your participation in this is optional and you are very welcome to sit and listen and not speak if this feels more comfortable. To help ensure that our meetings run smoothly and in line with the values of Frazzled Cafe, we ask that all participants agree to follow these guidelines: In reality however, her voice, down the line from where she and her family are taking a holiday in South Africa, is soft, and she sounds almost shy – not an adjective I’d have associated with her. ‘I love to travel,’ she says. ‘It’s how I relax.’

You would be forgiven for thinking 2020 was not the year for a book about good news. But now might be the time we need it most. Ruby Wax is here to reassure us with her brand new book, And Now For The Good News. This is her positivity prescription, showing us the green shoots of optimism and change forcing their way up and into the sunlight. Ruby sensed the need for a place where people could come together and connect with others in a safe, supportive space. A place where people could talk about the overwhelming stresses of modern life, free from judgement. This is what motivated her to create Frazzled Cafe in 2017. The inspiration for Frazzled Cafe came from our founder and patron Ruby Wax’s experiences during her best-selling book and theatre tours. Ruby met thousands of people looking to connect and share their stories. Whenever she asked her audience members if they wanted a chance to talk about what was going on for them, they always did. I found the book sobering, joyous and hopeful. There is a lot of food for thought in there and a lot of useful info about inspiring initiatives and resources. These include Ruby’s own Frazzled Cafe to help people who are finding life hard to cope with, i.e. most of us at some point in our lives - and especially so over the last few years.

Attendees usually speak for 1-2 minutes to ensure everyone that would like to has the opportunity to speak. You can of course speak more than once. Speaking is optional. If you would just like to listen, that is perfectly OK. In all meetings, and in between people speaking, we expect some silences and those are normal. The Trust is contributing funding and volunteers to the Hub, helping to connect people with existing groups and activities; funding a MIND outreach project in Harpenden and researching ‘gold standard’ initiatives that might be of benefit to our town’s wellbeing. An in-person Frazzled cafe will be a fantastic addition to our town and will run at Thompson’s Cafe in the center of town. This book shines a light on the hope we all need right now. There are people and communities and business’s working to make sure the future isn’t all doom and gloom. I’m very glad Wax took the time to write this for us all.My six-week course focuses on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). I know it works and so do the scientists. I studied this at Oxford University to try to lasso my wild mind. I also wanted to take some action after a bout of depression. With depression alone, for those who've had three or more episodes, MBCT yields a 60% chance of preventing relapse. A wonderful book full of passion, verve and humour’ Mark Williams, author of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World We are available for those who would benefit from joining a community of people that share similar feelings or, as Ruby says, the ‘weather conditions’ associated with the struggles of everyday life in a safe environment, without judgement, advice or fear and within our community guidelines and within a trusting environment Each meeting opens and closes with a short mindfulness exercise. You don’t need to ever have tried mindfulness before, and your participation in these exercises is completely optional.
