About this deal

I thoroughly enjoyed Runaway by Scottish author Peter May; my first by this author but most definitely not my last! A gripping crime novel, filled with fast paced, heart thumping tension; plus intrigue, emotional nostalgia and flashes of humour throughout. Told in the two timelines of 1965 and 2015 it worked incredibly well in showing the differences fifty years makes. I have no hesitation in recommending Runaway very highly. Just finished the Enzo M series on audio books! They were wonderful! The narrator Peter Forbes was excellent! I’ve read hundreds of audio books over the last 27 years and he is one of the best narrators I’ve ever heard. It makes the series come alive for me! Reply This was such a joy to read. Peter May captures the essence that was the swinging 60s so perfectly. Add to that the dark underbelly of London of that time and what you have is a compulsive reading experience. I have never felt the need to say anything to any author before and don’t really know how or what to say now. In 2006, Firemaker was runner up for the Best Crime Novel category in the Elle Magazine, Grand Prix de Litterature. Snakehead was the winner at the Salon Polar and Co, Cognac in the 2007 Prix Intramuros (France), and shortlisted at the Salon Polar and Co, Cognac in the 2007 Prix International as well. Chinese Whispers was shortlisted at the Salon Polar and Co, Cognac in the 2008 Prix International.

Trouble is, most psychiatrists like the sound of their own voices too much, it’s what the patient has to say that’s important. Listening is the virtue. But it was a hell of an adventure, and in a way I suppose it was inevitable that, having become a writer, it would one day provide the basis for a story. That story turned out to be Runaway, my latest crime novel. And when I shake my head now in recollection of our stupidity, I also revel in the opportunity that the story gave me to relive a little of my past, playing God with reality and reshaping it in fiction. I started my Peter May journey with the Lewis Trilogy which I absolutely loved. I met Peter today in Waterstones in Edinburgh at a book signing event, and he signed a copy of ‘A Winter Grave’ for me. I would loved to have spent more time chatting to him, but at least I have his new book which I look forward to reading. I told Peter how his fantastic description of the scenery in Harris and Lewis had sold the island to me, and my wife and I will be visiting it soon! Reply No one can create a more eloquently written suspense novel than Peter May.’ New York Journal of BooksFor the album cover, Stephen and I tried to replicate a photograph that was taken of us in a photobooth in Euston Station during that fateful trip. We spent our last half crown on it (never dreaming then, that it would end up all over something called the internet nearly half a century later). It’s an interesting comparison.

So do you remember where you were 50 years ago? These aging lads do – but they do not seem completely sure of how and why they have gotten to where they are. This is the second of Peter May’s books I’ve enjoyed (my review of ‘Cast Iron’, the final instalment in his Enzo series is here) and I look forward to reading more in time. ‘Runaway’, Em Fuga é mais um thriller onde o Passado surge como um Caçador que se esconde nos cantos mais escuros da memória, sempre alerta, a aguardar pacientemente o momento certo para investir sobre a(s) presa(s)! I have yet to read Runaway (I look forward to it), but did enjoy your music video with Stephen. I also remember Ian Looker. Is he still in Bristol? – I partly live there these days. With a musician, as it happens! Here they become involved in the experimental treatment of schizophrenics by a celebrity psychiatrist pioneering the use of LSD. This was inspired by the work of RD Laing at the Kingsley Halls in Bow, East London, during the mid-to-late 60s. Laing was something of a media celebrity himself, controversial in his theories and treatments, and was in many ways a quintessential product of that decade. It was interesting that during my researches into Laing I discovered that my wife had been at school with his son, and that Laing and I had been taught to play piano at the same Glasgow music school.Five of us had run away that fateful night just over a month before. Only three of us would be going home. And nothing, nothing would ever be the same again." Runaway is a gripping crime novel spanning two cities and half a century. This extraordinary work by Peter May explores how aspirations and expectations shape us, and the pivotal yet changeable role that friendships play in our lives. The housing around us became more sparse, and up ahead I saw that the street lights came to an abrupt end, leaving only darkness beyond them. Fear sat among us like another passenger. It could only be a matter of time before Andy made his move. I enjoyed the adventures the five young men and the three older men had, though there were elements that felt seriously contrived (of course the young men will just happen to stumble upon an icon or three of the era). The shifts between 1960s London and 2015 London were well handled, with the gradual revelations aiding our growing understanding of the key characters. I like the honesty of the overall story arc. Not all mistakes can be fixed, but life carries on regardless.
