About this deal

At the centre, where the mixing desk might normally be found, is Hebden, his Anglepoise lamp and his jumble of kit. Only about 100 people can actually see him, because although Hebden is now officially a superstar DJ, slaying dancefloors at Coachella last month, topping bills in proper clubs and headlining nights at festivals, he eschews elevation where he can. Hebden has arrived at a particularly sweet spot. Tech has set Four Tet free. Tonight’s gig is very 'Insta-ready'

He has continued to make albums under the Four Tet name since leaving Domino. His last, Parallel, was released on his own independent label Text Records in December 2020. That month, Hebden also released the album 871 under his 00110100 01010100 alias, also on Text. a b c Sherburne, Phillip (4 March 2019). " 'Only Human' by Four Tet Review". Pitchfork. Archived from the original on 5 March 2019 . Retrieved 5 March 2019. Richards told the court that none of Domino 's legal advisers had identified any case in which a recording contract had been held to include any “implied obligation to exploit”.

Hebden has been releasing music since 1997 under a variety of names, including Four Tet, Percussions, 00110100 01010100 and ⣎⡇ꉺლ༽இ ̛)ྀ◞ ༎ຶ ༽ৣৢ؞ৢ؞ؖ ꉺლ, as well as in collaboration with artists such as Steve Reid, Geoff McIntire (as Dempsey) and Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers (as Fridge). In March and April 2005, Four Tet performed two shows of improvisational music, in collaboration with jazz drummer Steve Reid, in Paris and London. He also appears on Steve Reid Ensemble 2005 album Spirit Walk. This collaboration was extended into a series of international tours, and the release of two albums, The Exchange Session Vol. 1 and The Exchange Session Vol. 2 over the course of 2005 and 2006. His restless forward momentum and pursuit of new sounds make every Four Tet album distinct from its predecessor. But with Four Tet’s ninth album, New Energy, Hebden does something unexpected: He revisits previous sounds. There’s the low-key warmth of 2003’s Rounds, the free jazz at the heart of 2005’s Everything Ecstatic, the friendly thump of 2012’s Pink, the sprawl of 2015’s Morning/Evening. Downtempo nodders, beatless passages that flow into big bangers—he synthesizes all this into his most accessible listen since There is Love in You. The ruling by Deputy Judge Treacy stated: “I have concluded that this is not a situation in which it would be appropriate to refuse Mr Hebden's request to amend his case to plead that the 2001 Agreement should be construed as including an express continuing obligation to use reasonable endeavours to exploit the Masters by all then-industry-standard means or that, in the alternative, such an obligation should be implied.”

Notes

After considering the arguments presented on December 16, Deputy Judge Treacy has now ruled that the additional claim over the streaming takedown of albums can be added to the existing legal case against Domino over streaming royalties. Though his work was more glitch and IDM-leaning prior (with acclaimed albums like Pause and Rounds) his collaborations with famed jazz musician Steve Reid and DJ residency at London’s now-closed The End in the late 2000s caused him to “think about rhythm and set dynamics differently.” He describes in a Tiga podcast interview that these two events taught him about restraint and taking your time. According to him, sometimes he falls flat on his face and looks like a complete fool, but when done right, he can allow the most explosive moments in a set to have even more impact. On 29 August 2019, Hebden had released a collection of three brand new songs as part of an EP called Anna Painting. The project was made in collaboration with painter Anna Liber Lewis, and features artwork by Liber Lewis in the release. Four Tet has always been one to flirt with dubstep and bass music, given by his love of tunes like The Bug’s ‘Skeng’ or Skream’s ‘2-D.’ But since he first went b2b with Skrillex in 2015, it seems that they’ve been sharing American bass music together ever since. a b c John Lewis (13 July 2008). Four Tet’s Lost Village sets are a great indicator of what he’ll do in a two hour solo DJ set. In his 2018 set, he starts with his official remix for Rihanna, plays an unreleased Burial collaboration (a rarity would be an understatement), then proceeds to custom remixes of Pearl Jam, Fela Kuti, Destiny’s Child and Nelly Furtado. Specifically, I do not agree that Mr Hebden's earlier objections to aspects of digital exploitation clearly support a reading of the original pleading as meaning that the 2001 Agreement did not authorise digital exploitation at all. Only limited evidence on this issue was available. The evidence that was available included Mr Hebden's Witness Statement dated 22 November 2021. That witness statement set out the circumstances in which Mr Hebden had objected to the streaming of his music via Spotify. It states that, after a request from Mr Hebden, Domino removed Mr Hebden's music from Spotify for a period of time after which Mr Hebden's Four Tet albums (but apparently not his singles) were made available to Spotify again.
