About this deal

The 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art weighs 630g/ 22.2oz., with a filter size of 77mm and a body length of 94.1mm/ 3.7in.*. Designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras, it has a “large lens diameter and superb optical performance” and “a lightweight and compact body,” a combination which has long been difficult to achieve. Auto-Focus– With a new AF motor, this lens is the star-performer of the Art lineup and is engineered to be unparalleled to its predecessor, and rivals top-of-the-line competitors. The lens has a dust and splash-proof construction to protect the mount from dust and water droplets.

Let’s begin with 85mm lenses with the slightly smaller f1.8 aperture. They do collect 2/3EV less light and produce slightly smaller circles of confusion but as a general rule they are smaller, lighter, and cheaper than their f1.4 brethren. This is also the category where two manufacturers now offer stabilized versions which can more than compensate for the loss in light-collecting power of f1.8 vs. f1.4: There’s the Tamron SP 85mm f1.8 VC for Nikon- Canon- and Sony A-mount (800 EUR) which earned a Highly Recommended in my Tamron 85mm f1.8 VC review and the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 for Sony E-mount (1200 EUR). For those that don’t want to jump into the nitty gritty details, here is a TLDR version of our review: pros The beauty of third-party manufacturers is that they can provide lenses for all the different brands. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art was specifically designed for full frame DSLRs. As a result, it is compatible with a variety of mounts like the Canon EF models (like the EOS 6D, EOS 90D, and EOS 5D), Nikon F models (like the D750, D6, and D850), the Sony E, and Leica L.If you have the “Which 85mm should I buy?” question on your mind, I hope that this article shows you the way. First of all we again see that f/1.8 lenses can never beat f/1.4 lenses in any point. I often get asked: “Is it worth buying an f/1.4 lens?”. My answer is a big yes. I can hand an A6000 over to a family member on Auto with that lens and they can use it for everything.

I own all Sigma Art lenses bar one (or two) and love them, this is the first Art lens I won't buy because I already have the 85GM and don't see any real value to the Sigma. A great feature is that this lens is also eligible for Sigma’s mount conversion service. So you don’t have to sell your lens if you’re thinking about changing systems. Additionally, it is compatible with the Mount Converter MC-11. This combination lets the photographer use the Sigma EF-mount lenses on Sony E-mount mirrorless camera bodies. You can get full lens performance, including autofocus, auto-exposure, and in-camera correction technology. For Nikon’s DSLR users, I recommend the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8F and Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4G. The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8F is super light, much smaller, and about half the price of the Sigma. For a beginner, the Nikon option is the perfect tool for learning. For the price you pay, the image sharpness and smooth bokeh are unparalleled. This is the part that I truly love about the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. It provides exceptional sharpness with smooth bokeh. Even wide open at f/1.4, this lens works incredibly well. Like I said before, I rented the Sigma on a weekend that I knew I would get a lot of use out of it! I had two engagement sessions and I LOVE using the 85 focal length, so I just made a point to use that one more than not. E Sesh 1Overall, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is excellent for professional photographers specializing in both indoor and outdoor portrait photography. Sigma falls behind when you consider the size and weight of the lens. It delivers exceptional image quality, ultrasonic focus, and fantastic performance at f/1.4. Distance information is relayed to the camera, so the Nikon body can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens. Same with the Nikkor, but the Otus cannot do that. [+] Size (diam. x length): 95 x 123 mm (3.7 x 4.8 in). The lens hood adds another 53mm to a total length of 176 mm (6.5 in.). Much longer and bulkier than the Nikkor at 86 x 84 mm, about the same as the hulking Otus, even wider at the focus-ring. [-] As you can see, Sigma 85mm Art is a big lens compared to other 85mms. This is sometimes an advantage, sometimes a weakness. Customers may think that you’re more “professional” with big lenses, but you may also think that you don’t need to carry this much weight to get good looking photos. Sharpness Tests The AF noise of the 85GM is something I usually don't hear and my ear is a fe winches away from the device, so it's an 'issue' blown completely out of proportion by a few people, mostly armchair enthusiasts and Sony haters.
