About this deal

In addition, the Common cards (and Japanese Faction cards) show which resources can be gained when a card is “razed”.

Feels like settlers but the fighting element begins much quicker than in the PC game (I have only vague memories so please forgive me if you think otherwise). Empires of the North boast some excellent production values, has some solid replay value, and even has a solo game mode for those who are interested in that. The pleasant looking chap on the front of the box, walking along the road with his dog creates a feeling of warmth and welcomeness. Designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek and published by Portal Games, Imperial Settlers is a 1–4 player, empire creating, engine building, resource gathering card game with a strong element of player interaction. And here’s where the viciousness comes in – that’s true of every engine around the table, and every single round the game gives you a bag of spanners and says ‘Go nuts! It really is a great game – a thoroughly enjoyable game that rewards genuine mastery and ruthlessly punishes mistakes It’s a game though that asks a lot of its players. The goal of the game is to have the most Victory Points, earned by expanding your empire and hindering your opponents. The game is played over a series of rounds, each of which has four phases: Players will have a variety of resources they will need to manage.

Imperial Settlers: Why Can’t We Be Friends, the first Empire Pack for Imperial Settlers, includes new common cards for the central deck, new cards for each of the base game’s four factions, and two new cards for use in the solo game. If we want to grab this expansion, we should know our options up front, and how these card replacement will affect our game tactics. As our beloved game, Imperial Settlers, continues to grow and reach new fans, the inevitable has happened: it has become necessary for us to errata a few cards. You pick a civilization, grab their faction deck, and then spend the rest of the game watching the eyes of your opponents to see when they plan to betray you. We can make use of the wood we got from razing our brewer to plant a ‘Primeval Forest’ – this is one of our faction buildings. Having one of your Buildings razed is also a possibility in Empires of the North, just like the base game, but here you can’t defend the Buildings at all.

This time around, players will gather a sizable amount of their resources not from production bonuses and “Deal” cards, but from sending boats to a board that allows players to gather resources and/or conquer islands. On the other hand, if you could build that in turn one it would be worth seven cards over the long term. After that, the Round marker is moved ahead one space on the Score Board, and the next round begins. The second phase is the Production Phase, and all players will gain the various resources, gold, workers, Victory Points, and/or cards that are listed in the Production section of their Faction board, any previously played Production location cards, and any goods generated by previously made Deals (more about that in the next section). Imperial Settlers is a game that has zero tolerance for inefficiency, and it will force that same mind-set upon you. Many of the locations in Japanese faction deck take advantage of the deal action, which works well with their food-storing ability.
