About this deal

His career as a top attorney (he has never lost a case) prosecuting men who abuse their wives also gives him the resources to provide Grace with anything she wants, even a brand new house, which she will only see after the honeymoon. Before he died, it seems, Felix Vodyanov was linked to a passenger ferry that sank in 1994, an even earlier U.

She says it was because at her birthday party, Millie told everyone her favorite color was yellow, but in other conversations, Jack referred to Millie’s future room as being painted red. Though she attempts to drop hints that Jack is a crazy person, and has even tried to yell for help in the supermarket, she has stopped those pleas for assistance from the outside world because Jack has told the police and her doctors that she is mentally unstable. To make things worse, there is a stark absence of descriptive imagery, the characterisation is gossamer-thin and I've seen more twists on a runway.Paris is the New York Times and Sunday Times Number 1 bestselling author of seven novels including the word-of-mouth hit, Behind Closed Doors and her upcoming thriller, The Guest. the focus of this book is the "perfect" marriage of jack and grace angel: he is a handsome lawyer specializing in domestic abuse who has never lost a case while she is beautiful and demure, retired from her high-powered career to transfer her accomplishments to the realm of the domestic arts: soufflé baking, painting, gardening, and entertaining; awaiting the day her special needs sister millie will turn eighteen, leave her boarding school, and come to live with them in their perfect house and be a part of their perfect life. From Grace’s perfectly fluffy souffles to Jack’s altruistic work as a lawyer for battered women, the couple is almost frustratingly perfect.

But that didn’t prevent me from appreciating the book — and, I would dare say, even enjoying the depth of emotions it made me feel. This is social history as it should be written…Yale has allowed a wealth of illustrations - over 100 - which adds to the book's enjoyment. I appreciate a logical handling to first-person present, but even then, the book is just another example of why the style should not be used in long-form fiction.I've been travelling to Bangkok for twenty years and if there is a beach there, neither myself nor the locals know of its whereabouts! B A Paris has written a really gripping psychological thriller which is head and shoulders above many others in the genre. For Claire's loving nature–and passionate secrets–had shaken the unshakable Quinn to the point where once his job ended, he didn't know if he would ever be able to walk away. It isn’t until the couple is away in Thailand for their honeymoon that Paris begins to dole out the first bites of something sour in the relationship. I can't remember the last time a book made me feel such an all-consuming, visceral hatred for a character.

And one thing that Grace is absolutely unwilling to do is subject her sister to horrors she’s experienced since marrying Jack. Booksource: After much of my begging around for this book I finally won a copy on Goodreads first reads. And while this is not completely unrealistic and I could believe he would go to such trouble to create his "fantasy", the mindless villainy of him, plus his penchant for showmanship, verges on a caricature. I listened until the end as wanted to know what would happen so I guess that is one positive however the ending was disappointing too. The *sickening* element is certainly present, but applied with a gentle hand and refrains from growing too dark or heavy. The characters, and their situations, were easy to become involved with and relatable for a teenage audience. Grace schemes a way to escape Jack’s clutches and save Millie from the same fate, but the tension sags. It transpires that Jack and Grace have been married just one year and that Grace gave up her job (a job she admits she loved) so that she could be home more often to support her husband. Even if the story is about a married couple, the story doesn’t have any romance, which was fine by me.

At its heart, Behind Closed Doors is a story of vulnerable young adults struggling with the universal and timeless issues of loneliness, friendships and growing up. Vickery can make a young wife’s arrangement of china into an event of thrilling social and psychological tension.

maybe ive been reading some pretty farfetched mysteries/thrillers lately, but this felt pretty realistic and plausible, which is probably why i enjoyed it so much.
