The UL5A is one of the more affordable sets in its lineup and, undeterred by its budget leanings, offers Dolby Vision HDR and Alexa integration. After a rocky start when it relaunched in the UK under the custodianship of Turkish brand Vestel, Toshiba has hit upon a consistent run of form, the last few sets have been met with four-star reviews from this very site. This can be done by selecting Settings in the Menu and choosing the input source, or by selecting the Live TV button on the remote.

The really startling thing about the 50UK3163DB’s HDR performance is that as well as delivering bright HDR shots with an impressively high level of baseline brightness, it still has enough brightness headroom to shift up another gear for the sort of ultra-intense highlights that really make HDR shine. Or that you’ll be able to enjoy variable refresh rate gaming, or the eARC HDMI loopthrough system that might have let you pass Dolby Atmos soundtracks losslessly through to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver.

There’s no integrated microphone, though, so you’ll need a compatible smart speaker or device to control the TV with voice commands. The 50UK3163DB’s remote is similarly big and chunky - but that’s not actually a bad thing given that it allows it to carry large, spaciously laid out buttons that fall easily to hand even in a dark room. With Tru Flow on, there remain moments of judder – and even turned off the image retains a processed look.

Toshiba has pinpointed its picture performance as an area of growth, developing the TRU Picture Engine. It offers always-on and quick hands-free access to Alexa functions, as well as displaying info on the screen such as the time, weather and calendar events.Provided, anyway, that you keep the set’s motion processing and noise reduction systems set to low or turned off entirely. Presentationally this actually works very well, resembling Samsung’s Eden platform in the way it limits its home screen appearance to a couple of icon decks at the bottom of the screen.
