What is CFexpress? The new camera memory card format
The CFexpress card (Type A & Type B) is currently the fastest and the most capable memory card format on the market, and it will be the standard of future memory cards for internal high resolution RAW video recording, because the theoretical maximum speeds are ridiculously high. The future will only see more and more cameras and devices using the CFexpress technology, including the Sony a7R V, Sony a1, Sony FX30 ( CFexpress Type A), and the Fujifilm X-H2, H2S, Canon R3, Canon R5, Canon 1D X Mark III, Nikon D6 and Canon EOS C300 Mark III ( CFexpress Type B). So, it is highly likely that CFexpress card will be the default choice for future-generation stills and video cameras. Like the Z6, there will be some photographers who will be unwilling to forgive the single memory card slot. Wedding photographers may especially nervous. The plastic ribs found on most SD cards are fragile. They can sometimes break the entire card casing or cause connectivity issues if they fail. This design is the SD card’s biggest weakness. Only Sony, with their TOUGH brand of SD cards, has solved this problem by producing a ribless SD card, as seen in the image above. Of note, PetaPixel did notice that a few cards took longer to recover than others. Namely, the ProGrade Digital Gold, Acer, Pro Master Pro Velocity Cine, and Pergear Ultra were slightly slower to fully clear the buffer than the other cards, meaning that a photographer in the field won’t be ready to fire another full burst quite as soon as they would be if they used any other tested card. For reliability, flexibility and speed, the Sony A1 has two media slots that are both compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC cards, as well as the new CFexpress Type A cards that deliver faster read/write speeds.
Sony CEA-G Series CFexpress Type A Memory Card
The main reason for this is because each of these types of memory card has a different number of PCIe data transfer lanes. The CFexpress Type A card has just one lane, Type B has two and t ype C has four. This means the three memory card types of card s offer different transfer speeds – Type A Cards have a maximum theoretical transfer speed of 1,000MB/s, Type B cards can theoretically reach 2,000MB/s and Type C cards, as discussed, can reach transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. While there is an equivalent format for SD, which is called SD Express, camera manufacturers seem to have overwhelmingly plumped for CFexpress. Like the memory card version of the battle between VHS and Beta-Max, this is the format to focus on when thinking about the future. When more are available, this guide will grow to include CFexpress Type A as well but, for now, the two options from ProGrade Digital and Sony perform basically identically. PetaPixel has not received Delkin’s option to test.

This is a far more common format with a more modest price as a result.
