About this deal

Next are the earbud casings themselves. Inside, you’ll find 14 mm dynamic drivers, but more on sound later. HyperX has included 3 different sized silicone patented ear tips. They’ve been made in an almost ‘wedge-shape style’ so removal from the ear canal is made easier. It’s a pity that HyperX has not included any foam ear tips, but the included tips still provide a comfortable experience. HyperX chose to stay faithful to its signature colors and added its logo on each earbud. This makes them stand out quite a bit. Any pro gamer can take one look at these IEMs and will know intuitively that they’re meant for gaming. However, the voices of my teammates came in clearly, and in-game sounds such as footsteps had some weight to them. Determining the position of your enemies came quite easily, which I found to be impressive, though it could’ve been much more with a surround sound feature. Microphone Quality The Cloud MIX Buds have omni-directional mics, which are…okay. People were able to hear my voice clearly over video and voice calls, but I’m very loud and my friends pointed out that it didn’t sound nearly as good as when I use a headset with a boom mic. I was also able to take calls on the street without issue, but the mics don’t have any built-in active noise canceling and the people on the other end of the line could definitely hear what was going on around me. It’s hard to cancel out noise completely with earbuds, but the Cloud Earbuds are still able to reduce environmental sounds, at least to the point that they sound muffled. Fortunately, they weren’t too distracting while playing immersive games, such as Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A screenshot from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

If you’re looking for some gaming earbuds that will connect to all your devices, keep looking.

While we’re talking about deluxe, the 3.5mm plug actually sports a shiny gold plating, intended to prevent rust from forming. It’s quite interesting to see in which areas HyperX chose to put in the more lavish details. Comfort The Cloud Earbuds when worn HyperX’s NGENUITY has been — will be? — updated for the Cloud MIX Buds. The iOS app is available now but I wasn’t able to get the Windows app to update and/or recognize the earbuds. The software isn’t amazing, but it does offer a couple of useful settings and features. Yet, the Battle Buds also have in-line volume controls, which is an essential tool in gaming. This is a key feature missing from the Cloud Earbuds. The length is perfect for mobile devices. It doesn’t tangle very easily as well, which is supposedly the objective of the flat cable design in the first place. Before I get into audio quality, let me mention what a difficult process it was to even get to a point where I was able to assess audio quality.

Moreover, the Battle Buds come with a soft carry pouch that you tie together, whereas the Cloud Earbuds use a hard, rubber zip-up case. This adds a winning point for the Cloud Earbuds. I still would’ve preferred the braided nylon cables that are common in gaming headphones, but the rubber material of the cable seems sturdy enough. Over time, its color will probably fade though. One major difference between the Cloud Earbuds and the Turtle Beach Battle Buds is the removable boom mic. This is a unique design feature that really makes the Battle Buds stand out in the competition. But the boom mic advantage seems to end at the design. Compared to the HyperX Cloud Earbuds, the Battle Buds’ boom mic actually falls short in quality because of the echo and high sensitivity. However, I managed to hear every subtle detail, such as the wind direction or the ocean waves. For a pair without an active Surround Sound feature, this was pretty impressive. A screenshot from FortniteIn terms of comfort, the Cloud Earbuds definitely win. Both pairs make use of unique ear tip shapes. But with the Battle Buds, they brought discomfort, while for the Cloud Earbuds, they made them extremely comfortable on the ears. HyperX is a brand known for its high-quality gaming peripherals. They have released headphones, keyboards, and mice catered towards casual players and professionals. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the company is having a go at the expanding gaming earbud market. Traditionally, we have all been led to believe that headphones reign supreme in terms of audio quality. In most cases, this is the truth, but with the increase in mobile and console gaming, the HyperX Cloud Earbuds aim to close the gap between performance and comfortability. Design One of the biggest reasons for using gaming earbuds over gaming headphones is their lightweight structure. Headphones can be cumbersome and, after a few hours of gaming, they can put a strain on your ears. The HyperX Cloud Earbuds weigh just 0.67 ounces and are a perfect option for those looking for mobility and long-term comfort. Next, we went with a classic, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which would be slower-paced and more immersive. Upon entering a nearby tavern, the music sung by a bard was clear and the instruments were not piercing to the ear. The sound was well-rounded and could even be compared to that of headphones. What’s in the Box?

The HyperX Cloud Gaming Earbuds are somewhat in the budget range of earphones when compared to in-ear monitors. Of course, as a pair of gaming earbuds, you’d expect the additional features of a microphone, in-line controller, and customization. In-ear monitors focus primarily on sound quality and save expenses by not adding all the extras. So, how do the HyperX Cloud Gaming Earbuds fair in terms of sound quality? The HyperX Cloud Earbuds has been marketed for the Nintendo Switch and mobile gaming. It is rather surprising that they have not included any volume controls, which can be a deal-breaker for some. Although you can adjust the volume on the device you’re using, it would have been nice to see this feature included. However, for a relatively steep price point compared to other gaming earbuds, I would have expected the material to be a little more deluxe than plastic. Even the earpieces seem to be made of the same material as the wire, albeit slightly more rigid. This makes for a very uniform appearance, but it’s hardly an imaginative one. I started with the 2.4-GHz wireless dongle, which I plugged into my PC using the adapter (the dongle plugs into the adapter, and the USB-C to USB-A charging cable plugs into a USB port on your PC). I opened the Cloud MIX Buds, and they successfully paired to the dongle — or so I thought. I then had an online meeting to attend, and it was at that point I discovered that the microphone wasn’t working. The 47-inch cable has been rubberized to prevent tangles. This is a nice feature we have seen on most in-ear gaming earbuds these days. If you’re commuting early in the morning, the last thing that anyone wants to do is fiddle with cables. It should be noted here that the cable is not interchangeable or replaceable. The cables form part of the earbud casing and cannot be removed.

A little more versatility with an included Y-cable would have been preferable, but for handheld gaming consoles, they work just fine.
