It saves energy– tests done by the BSRIA show that a Chimney Balloon stops 87% of warm air flow out of your house which means your heating system can work a lot more efficiently. As this warm air rises, it needs to be replaced. So cold air is pulled in, usually from around doors and windows, creating the chilly draught that you can feel (and hear when it’s windy). When our kids are older I’d like a wood burner but until then our chimney is just a source of wasted heat. So I started looking into what was available. I came across chimney sheep* & a chimney balloon* which you can buy, put in your chimney and blow up. When you want to use the fire you just deflate it. You can reuse it many times over so quite thrifty already. This made me wonder if I needed to buy it or if I could make my own. Safety Tips for Chimney Balloon Users
A chimney balloon is a device placed up your chimney and just like a regular balloon it’s essentially an inflated balloon, helping to limit heat loss and draught formation. Please note: you will need 13 cm on the side of the washing machine and approx. 60 cm in height clearance so that you will be able to easily unscrew the housing and change the filter comfortably. Sinead Hoben has written a very thorough account of her journey through chimney draught busting, from her own DIY chimney draught excluder (caused damp) to finding chimney balloons online, to looking for an alternative to the balloon, to finding the Chimney Sheep, to trying out a balloon for comparison. The rubber bands hold the top and bottom together, enabling it to push outwards as it’s inflated. The top and the bottom of the balloon provide a double barrier. Air is trapped inside the balloon, insulating the chimney against cold air sinking down, while simultaneously preventing warm air from rising up. If you have used one of your balloons but want to keep using it over time rather than buying another one, wash and dry it at least once every few months.
Selecting The Proper Size

Available in lots of different sizes – please don’t waste your money on a product that claims to be a universal fit. Unfortunately, it is not that easy because chimney flues vary from being the size of a bean can to the size of a door, and there just isn’t a material that is stretchy enough, strong enough or versatile enough to be an effective fit for all those different sizes. It is also important to choose a product that still allows for a degree of ventilation. This will prevent any damp issues from occurring. Some, such as The Chimney Balloon, feature small vents, while natural products made from wool are breathable by their very nature. Wait until the fireplace is completely cool without hot ash, before you begin measuring the area. Cleaning all the cooled ashes out of the fireplace before you begin will make the entire process cleaner. You’ll need to measure up the internal flue of your chimney and choose the right size of product accordingly.
