About this deal

Toto guitarist Steve Lukather‘s new studio solo album, Bridges, is out now, on The Players Club/Mascot Label Group, and concurrent with that is his latest video single release, ‘Not My Kind Of People’. His reputation as a skilled guitarist led to a steady flow of session work beginning in the 1970s that has since established him as a prolific session musician, recording guitar tracks for more than 1,500 albums spanning a broad array of artists and genres. The project was a challenge to Lukather, who had to be creative to turn the traditionally simple songs into something interesting for listeners without altering the fundamental structures.

STEVE LUKATHER - Bridges - 100% ROCK MAGAZINE MUSIC REVIEW: STEVE LUKATHER - Bridges - 100% ROCK MAGAZINE

Someone is an interesting alternative pop-rock track that we can easily picture appearing on an 80s dark fantasy soundtrack; and When I See You Again is an upbeat song that feels like the love child of ELTON JOHN’s Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting and HARRY STYLES’ Golden. We commented that the previous excursion - ‘I Found The Sun Again’– was a bit short on time and ‘Bridges’ follows on with a LP length offering. This is Lukather's first solo studio album in eight years, [2] following Transition (2013), marking the longest gap between two albums to date.

Well-versed in music theory, Lukather can follow chord charts and changes in a way typical of jazz musicians—this ability enhances his value as a session musician.

Although he enjoys the technical mastery that is possible in the studio, Lukather prefers the dynamic of performing live on stage.Additionally, he released a memoir titled The Gospel According To Luke that was a global bestseller. Santamental, released in October 2003, [37] is a collaborative project featuring several prominent musicians such as guitarists Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Steve Vai, and drummer Gregg Bissonette. Much like the rest of the songs on this collection, this song perfectly bridges not only the different sounds and textures of Lukather’s career to date, but demonstrates he isn’t yet done constructing his musical legacy.

Steve Lukather: Bridges album review | Louder

All's Well That Ends Well draws from Lukather's personal experiences in the two years since Ever Changing Times. Tracks like Someone and the fulsome ballad, All Forevers Must End, are a true celebration of Lukather, the vocalist. His father was an assistant director and production manager at Paramount Studios, and worked on shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and I Dream of Jeannie. Following this lawsuit, Toto are not releasing any new studio material, a decision seemingly made in the vested interest of the band. One of my favorite tracks from ‘ Bridges’ is next up , ‘All Forevers Must End’ , co-written between Steve and long term writing partner Randy Goodrum. Lukather recruited keyboardist Jeff Babko and guitarist Larry Carlton, who Lukather had worked with previously, to help arrange the songs. Lukather commented that MacMillan served as a valuable "second set of ears" in the studio, often encouraging him to keep parts that he normally would have discarded. Alongside his tenure as the only member of ToTo to never take a hiatus from the band, he has performed on thousands of albums as a session musician. The transitions between verses and choruses are amazing but the coolest nuances are the lyrics that give voice to the vocals when Steve proclaims ‘so many friends have come and gone’ you know he has no plans of leaving any time soon.

Regularly crossing over between jazz/funk, the power of 1980’s classic rock with a nod in between to the sounds of the 70’s. I wonder whether it is as much to do with the producer and associates, I think Luke is at his best when he has a consistent close collaborator as with the landmark 2010 album ‘Alls Well That Ends Well’. Lukather is the original lead guitarist for Toto, serving in that capacity for the band's entire history, as well as composer and lead and backing vocalist. The vocals are textured to pair perfectly with the guitar work and overall instrumentation of the track. He has said about this approach: "If a solo didn't work—either because I didn't have the right sound, or because I wasn't inspired at that moment—I'd just move on.With him declaring that there will never be another studio album from Toto, co-writing most of the record with Joseph Williams and David Paich, and appearances from other past members, Bridges is as close as you’re going to get. and The Players Club / Mascot Label Group have released a new studio album titled BRIDGES (reviewed HERE).
