Under the Waves is the first of the French publishers’ indie titles to see a release, and while it’s still very much a narrative-driven experience, it’s clearly different to the type of game you would typically expect from Quantic’s internal team. Over the waves, the sea lions bark and seagulls wheel and call. The bay is smooth and bright in the sun. But under the waves, there’s a whole hidden forest, full of whales and wolf eels, sardines and sea bass, leopard sharks and luminous jellies, as well as the waving kelp that shelters them all. A family heads out in their kayaks on a beautiful day on the ocean. As they paddle away from the beach, they watch sea lions slip into the water and see pelicans soar overhead looking for fish to eat. They imagine the kelp bass below them hunting for small fish. They see a mama otter and her pup cuddled together while another otter swims below searching for red abalone and sea urchins. The only other humans seen in the game are a reporter on TV and a handful of scenes near the end of the game (which, again, we won’t go into) – otherwise the only other interactions Stan has are infrequent chats with his wife, who remains at home while he’s off on his period of isolation.

While this is understandable, given the game’s native language is French, it’s rather extreme – almost every time we see a close-up of Stan during conversations, his mouth will continue to move long after he’s stopped talking. This, coupled with the rather low-quality character models, frequently broke the immersion for us.A love letter to the oceans, Under The Waves invites you to dive into a gorgeous underwater world, brought to life in a poetic blend of cinematic visuals and poignant storytelling. Live a gripping story through Stan’s eyes and guide him through an unforeseen series of events that will bring him deeper and deeper into the abyss, the reflection of his own psyche. There’s a fairly linear path through the game, as each mission develops the plot further, but there’s also scope for some side-quests dotted around here and there, which encourage further exploration and even the occasional photography assignment. These are completely optional, and it’s possible to complete the game without straying off the set course once or taking a single photo.
