The innovative designs of Interstellar Lab might seem like a moonshot, but the projects are materializing on Earth as they just released their first BioPod, with the help of Dassault Systemes 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud. Jim Rhoné, Chief Product Officer at Interstellar Lab, talks to designboom to delve into the forward-thinking company and its extraterrestrial work. The BioPod container is assessed for its potential to perform economically viable under the three scenarios of vegetable production. The first 1:1 BioPod was completed in September 2022, and now in test and experimentation phase for Earth applications. As data is progressively gathered from all sensors used to monitor BioPod behaviours and parameters, simulations will be refined and made even more accurate, so that future iterations can be easily expanded on the platform. The self-sustainable BioPod does not feel like a moonshot anymore; it is now a reality. Sophie is also working on a conservation project on campus, to provide a safe and biodiverse habitat for native wildlife such as hedgehogs to return to campus. As part of this project, they have even planted some berry bushes and have started a little vegetable garden.

The structure is installed without a foundation and at 11m long, 5m wide and 6m high, it offers up to 100m2 of controlled growing space. Interstellar Lab launched the mini extraterrestrial cities, called Experimental Bio-Regenerative stations (Ebios), as their first project in 2018. They discuss different ways of visualising protein structures and how sound can help us get more information from protein sequences. In his research, he turns a protein sequence into a short melody. From this melody, it is then possible to “hear out” some distinct features of the protein. Eddie also explains the intricacies of sound design and how to best convey the variations between different amino acids. With the Biopod app, you tell it what to do and it will create the ideal environment, and if you're a novice at seeding, the app will provide a step-by-step guide. Handy.
