About this deal

The pros of this little printer are it makes beautiful prints, is intuitive to use and relies on Bluetooth connectivity. On the down side it’s bulkier than its smaller format siblings but it makes slightly larger prints so you need to weigh up your needs.

We love instant photography at AP, and our team regularly test and review the best instant cameras – one of our writers recently explored why the Instax mini 8 is a lot more than just a toy. As such, we’ve had a few debates among staff in putting this list of the best instant cameras and printers together, but as a result, there should be options for all stripes of instant shooter. In addition to writing hundreds of articles for PCMag, over the years he also wrote for many other computer and business publications, among them Computer Shopper, Digital Trends, MacUser, PC World, The Wirecutter, and Windows Magazine. He also served as the Printers and Scanners Expert at About.com.The main difference is in the type of printing method. Instax models use the same instant photo paper present in the brand’s instant cameras for a real film look, there are several models out there that use Zink (or “zero ink”) paper tech. This is photo paper that takes on colour in a process that uses crystals and heat, but this is notable for a slightly poorer image quality. The Polaroid Hi-Print is a little different than either approach, using dye-sublimation for accurate colours. Print speed With various options available from multiple brands, choosing the best portable photo printer can be a bit daunting. These are the key factors to consider before buying: Printer type We then used both smartphones to snap a large variety of photos to test with our lineup of portable printers. On the Galaxy S21 Ultra, we took photos with the 108MP wide-angle camera, along with the 10MP telephoto lens. On the iPhone 12 Pro Max, we tested shots taken with the phone’s 12MP camera system. Once the shooting was complete, we selected an image from each of the following groups: There are plenty of more powerful image editing apps out there. Still, having these options built into the app is a nice touch. You can even use the app to capture new photos, without having to switch over to your smartphone’s camera interface. The colours and retro reproduction from the Instax printers are our favourites in general, and we’re less sure about the Zink printer options available on the market. This, however, uses a slightly different approach that sets it apart.

There’s no charging the Kiipix Portable Mini Printer, nor any need to plug it in. Simply load it with Instax Mini film, place your phone face down on the scanner (with the brightness cranked all the way up – trust us), use the reflective mirror to ensure it’s properly aligned, and then you can manually crank out the prints yourself. If you’re after a bit of a balance between the larger wide film and the tiny mini film available from Instax, then the square format is the one you’re looking for. This is the most up-to-date printer from the brand, using the widespread USB-C charging port rather than the less common and older Micro USB alternative present in much of the range, and it has the same sleek styling we’re used to from Instax printers. Finally there are Zink printers that use zero-ink paper, embedded with color crystals, that offers the cheapest printing option –with often middling quality that's neither as good as a dye sub print, nor as intentionally lo-fi as an Instax print. Do portable printers need ink? This was the only model where photos developed after being printed. I felt like our smartphone had been transformed into a classic Polaroid camera. It was a pleasure watching the photos the Instax produced slowly come to life. That said, impatient photographers might find this charming bit of nostalgia to be a dealbreaker. The Polaroid Hi-Print is the most well-rounded phone photo printer of all the models we tested. It features a playful, sturdy design and above-average print quality. We’d also suggest looking at the battery life of the printer, as it determines how many prints you can make before recharging. Look for printers with long-lasting batteries and consider whether they use standard batteries or rechargeable ones. Most of the portable photo printers you’ll find also produce images that are pretty tiny so they can remain compact and portable to bring with you on your travels.

Once printed, photos appeared crisp with a surprising amount of detail. However, the color reproduction was not always accurate. Portable photo printers typically print a single size of photo: 3x3, 2.7x2.7, and 2x3-inch prints. While the larger 3x3 sizes work well for portraits and selfies, the wider 2x3 format is more appropriate for landscape photography.Superior Photo Quality: The Kodak Mini 3 Retro utilizes 4PASS technology, which allows you to print flawless photos in just a few seconds. As the photos are printed on layers of color and laminated, they are protected against fingerprints and water. Photos last over a 100 years! My name is Mike Yawney. I have been reviewing tech products for over 15 years. Most of that time has been spent in front of the camera, talking tech and reviewing everything from smartphones to video games on one of Canada's most popular national morning television programs. Others used Zink technology. Zink paper is embedded with dye crystals that change color once heat is applied.

The Mini 2, which connects to your phone via Bluetooth to retrieve photos and print them, is an easy way to print wallet-sized photos at home or on the go. Never used a mini printer before, and are you a little nervous about technology generally? Don't worry: the handy Kodak app for Android makes this printer a breeze to use.By making use of the Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities of this printer you can enjoy printing in seconds: it’s compatible with both iOS and Android via the Bluetooth connection. I always have their latest smartphone in hand, a new laptop on my desk, and a game installed on my console, ready to review. The TestsThe devices we tested a variety of different printing techniques. Three of the printers used dye sublimation, which uses heat to transfer ink from film sheets to photo paper. This process takes time. Each sheet of photo paper passes through the printer four times to lay down each layer of color before the final print emerges. We reached out to Victure with our concerns. The company responded, telling us it uses the same manufacturer as Kodak for its portable printer. It’s certainly not unheard of in the tech world for two different companies to use the same manufacturer, but they typically offer different features and app interfaces to differentiate themselves. Instant cameras come in two types – ones that use actual instant film, such as Polaroids and Fujifilm Instax cameras, and digital instant print cameras made by Kodak and Canon, which use photo paper. Generally, instant film images will look much better, with improved tonality and image quality. However, instant photo paper tends to be much cheaper to buy.
