About this deal

I kind of predicted a few of the twists, thanks I’ll say to foreshadowing much earlier in the book, but some of them were new. Her father is in denial that his son is now his daughter, and has been verbally abusive toward Danny. Be needlessly cruel to Danny based on the absolute worst examples of transphobic feminists that the author has dealt with. I can’t attest to how accurate Danielle was handled as a trans girl, but I do know Daniels herself is trans so that’s excellent!

He fell off continually; every time, despite his prayers and tears, he was lifted up and set upon its back again. Inheriting the Dreadnought mantle pretty much guarantees Danny a spot at the cape table—when she turns eighteen. And Daniels makes it clear that even though Danny lucked out and side-stepped the whole transition quandary and now also has superpowers, none of this solves the institutional transphobia of our society.Chanting curse words like a prayer, I crawl out from my little hiding spot and grab him under the armpits.

Even for teens, growing up in the age of superhero movies means that this book probably isn’t offering anything new in terms of story other than Danny. Danielle teams up with vigilante heroine Calamity to track down the previous Dreadnought’s murderer, only to stumble upon a plan to destroy the human race. This story isn't silly, but it does embrace some of the ridiculousness that comes inherently with people who have super powers and wear costumes to fight crime. This was the most offensive part of the book – the idea that being a woman means that you are more emotional. I love superheroes stories, I love both Marvel and DC’s universe and I watch a ridiculous amount of superhero movies and shows I was extremely interested by the fact that the main character is transgender and I was so prepared to love this. The powers transform her body, so her girlhood—once a total secret—is now visually impossible to hide. During her weekly ritual, she’s caught nearby when a fight breaks out between the famed Dreadnought and the apparent small-time villain Utopia who’s managed to take him out.

She's taken to meet Dreadnought's colleagues (some welcoming, some not) in the Legion Pacifica and gets some answers to burning questions. I don’t want to suggest that people banish the book off their shelves or protest libraries to get rid of it. However, as great as it is to have a trans lesbian superhero, Dreadnought might not be for everyone. I just don’t care enough to want to know more about this world and the characters, I wish I gave up on this book because I just feel like I lost my time. Similarly, near the end of the book, Calamity and Dreadnought are sent to get some N2 or, as Calamity explains, non-Newtonian liquid.Danny also mentions several times throughout the book that she’s subject to more emotional highs and lows because of estrogen, and that her feelings have been unlocked now that she’s a girl. A few of her colleagues suggest that Greywytch stop being such an asshole, but her EXTRAORDINARILY inappropriate comments are mostly tolerated. Dreadnought is one of the most famous superhero in the US and well, Danny didn’t expect him to die and pass all of his powers into her hands. Calamity gets more development, but she is primarily a vigilante, angry at the world because of unfairness. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement.
