Alas, every great party leads to a brutal hangover: After recording sessions in Barbados went notoriously over-budget and off the rails (ahem), 1992’s Yes Please! Happy Mondays started life as a weird indie band out of Salford who came to the attention of the legendary Factory Records. The latter, recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, went platinum in the UK, selling more than 350,000 copies. On 15 July 2022, the band announced via their Facebook page that Paul Ryder had died in the early hours of that morning.Happy Mondays is comprised of frontman Shaun Ryder, percussion master Mark Berry, better known as "Bez", vocalist Rowetta, guitarist Mark Day, drummer Gary Whelan and keyboard player and guitarist Dan Broad. They have announced an international tour to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches. With epochal albums like 1988’s Martin Hannett-helmed Bummed and 1990’s Paul Oakenfold-produced Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches, the Mondays were largely responsible for putting the “mad” in Madchester, pairing psychedelic-funk grooves and strobe-lit club beats with Shaun’s dime-bag philosophies and incisive nonsense.

In the place of Day and Davis were Wags and a number of other session musicians including Ben Leach who had once been a member of The Farm, percussionist Lea Mullen, and rapper "Nuts". One of the best tracks from the Martin Hannett-produced Bummed album in 1988, this tune captures Happy Mondays perfectly before they hit the big time, complete with Ryder's combination of gibberish and urban poetry.Happy Mondays signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Records in the late 1980s and blended their love of funk, rock, psychedelia and house with sounds from the UK's emerging rave scene. The group's work bridged the Manchester indie rock music of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, drawing influence from funk, house, and psychedelia to pioneer the Madchester sound. Taking Labelle's disco-era hit Lady Marmalade as its inspiration, this matched Step On in terms of chart success and gave new recruit Rowetta a moment in the spotlight.
