About this deal
Certainly in Norman’s coming alive again, Henderson captures, so achingly beautifully, the tension we all feel when life moves on, as it always does, and we are faced with embracing it while trying to not forget the person we have lost.

But - and I know I’m just being repetitive with this type of complaint - Sadie and Norman sounded exactly the same. I could sort of accept it, as Norman was a product of Sadie’s influence and he was seemingly precocious, but it still bugged me that they felt like the same character.
Media Reviews
There were certainly some characters in this story, as well as our three main characters, you have the potential fathers, and the people they meet along the way. My favourite has to have been Big Al, who they meet at their first stop, he was a definite diamond in the rough. Norman Foreman will capture your heart. His story had me in tears, both of laughter and sorrow, as he bravely battles against the odds to achieve his dream. The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman is a book full of hope, humour and kindness, with one of the most endearing central characters I've met in a long time. An utter delight! Norman Forman Book Discussion Questions The Funny Thing About Norman Forman
The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman is an inspiring, feel-good novel about a small boy with a big heart, a woman who would do anything for her son, and a journey that will change their lives … The writer brings the reader along on Norman and his mother Sadie's journey—both of them are grappling with grief, Norman's from the present and Sadie's from the past. Over the course of the book, the two learn that grief need not define their lives; the message is that joy can always be found, even following the depths of sorrow (Hilary D). Although there is pathos and sadness surrounding the loss of Norman's best friend and comedy partner, Jax, there is love and growth and friendship and stamina and determination (Ginny H)... continuedSadie always put up with very naughty Jax because he had a certain lightness about him and laughed a lot and made Norman laugh. The two boys were never bored. Now though? The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman is funny. It is charming, warm, and uplifting as well. There is so much to love about this book.’ Laurie Frankel, author of This is How it Always Is I have heard great things about this book. I am glad to see that you concur with other readers. Great review.

And while, there is very much a substantial element of that running through the delightfully engaging narrative, the reality is that there is also a tremendous amount of skillfully woven-in heartbreaking pain and grief. Norman is 12 years old when his best friend and comedy partner Jax dies, ending their 'Five-Year Plan' to do a stand-up show at the Edinburgh Fringe by the time they're fifteen. Norman decides to pay tribute to Jax by rewriting the plan: take care of his mum, find dad, and go to the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Norman's mum, Sadie, finds his list and promises to get Norman a slot at this year's Fringe. One of those gorgeous books that completely lifts your spirits and restores your faith in humanity. An utterly lovely tale.' Ruth Jones, actress and author of Never Greener I love the tagline “It was a journey they would always remember . . . for a friend they’d never forget.” The Funny Thing about Norman Foreman sounds like a great read.
The hunt is on! It's a road trip with Leonard's spreadsheet of names, an itinerary, and his complete command of Google maps. I liked the premise of the story and the characters. A lot was improbable, but that didn’t bother me. Some of the people they meet along the way are a bit over the top, too, but they added a little colour.
Book review: The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman by Julietta
courtesy Penguin Random House) If really good sci-fi is all about to taking a great big, long, hard look at the dark soul of humanity, and the best of it is, then Voyaging Vol. 1 – The Plague Star by George R R Martin with art and adaptation by Raya Continue Reading I felt the world slow down, shudder and grind to a halt as I looked into my son’s eyes and all of a sudden realized with absolute clarity what I’d been way too blinded by my own sadness to notice since Jax had died. Norman was so much braver than I would ever be.” Now a full-time writer, Julietta divides her life between Melbourne, the UK and wherever else she can find winter. The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman is her debut novel.Let’s face it, it could have been dreadful: a twelve-year-old boy with psoriasis dreams of doing a comedy show at the Edinburgh Fringe with his best friend (who is the funny one) but the best friend dies suddenly. His single mum and her very elderly friend decide to help him do a Fringe show anyway, and try to find out who his father is, to boot. It could be sloppy, sentimental, manipulative drivel and I’m not even sure why I tried it, to be honest – but I’m glad I did because it’s nothing of the kind. Death – There’s a lot of things you have to think about when you don’t have a best friend any more. Like where you’re going to sit for lunch and who you’re going to talk to about last night’s ‘Live at the Apollo’, and what you’re going to say when people ask you if you’re OK. And how you’re going to finish your ‘pairs’ biology project when the other half of your pair is gone. Humor: If you’re looking for a humorous read with generous sides of grief and adventure, you might appreciate this heartfelt story! Norman has psoriasis; this leaves his skin with red, itchy and dry patches that are sensitive to touch. Norman has always been a loner until he met Jax. Norman and Jax became the best of friends and had a dream of one day performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, but Norman is left to dream alone after Jax suddenly passes away. Sadie is a single mom who is trying to balance life when her son's best friend, the Rolls-bloody-Royce of best friends, dies. Norman and Jax had 5 year plan to perform as a comedy duo at The Fringe. Now without the other half of the duo, the plan has changed but must go on. Enter Leonard, an elderly co-worker of Sadie's who concocts a plan to get Norman to The Fringe. Then they embark on a roadtrip like no other to get Norman to The Fringe to perform.
