The game opens with the four familiars safe in their wizard’s home. That is, until the queen entrusts them with her baby, the princess Millie. The evil Lord Perish has usurped the throne, and the wizard sends the familiars off to bring Millie to safety. After this dramatic opening, you take the roles of the familiars across the campaign’s three eras. Bottrell, William. (1880). Stories and Folk-Lore of West Cornwall, Penzance: F. Rodda. Meet the Familiars

The familiars know that every choice they make will affect the young one in their care. If they are victorious and the throne is reclaimed, what kind of woman will sit upon it?

In the third era, Milly is now a teen and is greatly independent. Players can use their skill cards to move Milly and to perform skill tests with her. But don’t forget that she still needs guidance, emotional support, and of course food.

The historian Emma Wilby noted how the accounts of such familiars were striking for their "ordinariness" and "naturalism", despite the fact that they were dealing with supernatural entities. [9] A familiar spirit – ( alter ego, doppelgänger, personal demon, personal totem, spirit companion) is the double, the alter ego, of an individual. It does not look like the individual concerned. Even though it may have an independent life of its own, it remains closely linked to the individual. The familiar spirit can be an animal (animal companion).

By no means do you need kids to play Familiar Tales. If you enjoy games like Mice and Mystics or Stuffed Fables - or any RPG-campaigns-in-a-box kind of experiences - you almost assuredly will adore this game with or without kids. In fact, you can even play this game solo by controlling all 4 familiars and I think that’s absolutely brilliant. In the second era, the baby has grown into a precocious little girl. You no longer must carry her as she is capable of following you around. She requires lots of play and food and emotional support. There are icons on the skill cards that can affect your skill tests in a variety of ways. Notice the symbols in the upper left corner. These icon effects are: In some cases familiars replace children in the favour of their mothers. (See witchcraft and children.) Familiar Tales has its roots in games like Mice and Mystics and Forgotten Waters. Indeed, this is the latest offering from Jerry Hawthorne, the master of weaving together these narrative adventures. So much is going for this wonderful title, but we got a little tripped up in the chase. We’ll explain as we go. SetupMasson, Elsie. (1929).
