About this deal

These mostly net you some bonus gold but there are fun exceptions such as the hook token that lets you keep a card you’ve played in your tableau, which can be handy if it has an ongoing “night” effect. The Board Game Family would like to thank Stonemaier Games for a review copy of Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. Ten years later, we’re celebrating the foundations of the original design with a revised and expanded edition that includes all-new art, 40 characters per player, a reputation system to resolve tiebreakers, deluxe loot tokens, a robust solo mode, and much more. Then, before you know it, you arrive at the next station on your crowded train – or in Libertalia terms – the dusk phase. After a couple of days, the plot thickens because you and the other players no longer have the same cards.

I had a rare opportunity to take this game round to some non-board gaming friends to see how it faired. An instant solution would be to have more images in the booklet but once you figure out how it’s supposed to work, it’s very intuitive, just like the regular game. If there was a good (hook/map/chest) loot token and a bad token, Automa would play the third card from the right. There’s pushing and shoving, trying to be first in the line so that you can be the first to take your daytime action, especially if you have a card that affects the loot available.

Night abilities happen at the end of every turn where that character still resides on your ship, which is a fancy way of saying “the table in front of you. However, if you happen to make a couple of really bad plays early on, it feels nearly impossible to catch back up. There are a few references to adjacent players, which sit directly beside you on your right or left for certain effects. The only other component is a board plus some tiles to place on it to vary the effects of the loot tokens.I am however a huge supporter of the decision to bring artist Lamaro Smith on board this project to add his visual flair to Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. The bright colors feel so adventurous to me, but the new style doesn’t really seem to float my local game group’s boat so hopefully I’ll get the chance to play this at a convention or board game cafe. Having enjoyed the Viticulture metal coins since Christmas, I’m delighted that the pirate version is available as an optional accessory. It’s double-sided, printed with player aids and everything is laid out in a neat and effective manner to help facilitate the gameplay.
