About this deal

With a large majority of Brother Sewing Machines been targeted towards beginners, it should come as no surprise that the Brother AE1700 is designed with ease of use in mind. The automatic bobbin winder is one very newbie friendly feature, this saves you from having to wind the bobbin manually. Compared to some other similar priced sewing machines the Brother AE1700 has a good selection of stitches. In total there are 17 stitches all of which can be found in the image below. If you are looking for even more stitches from your new sewing machine then the Brother AE2500 should be on your radar, it has 25 stitches and only costs a few quid more than the AE1700.

Needle threading is done manually with the Brother LS14 as there is no built-in needle threader. Freehand Stitching With a top-loading bobbin system, the LS14 straight away has an advantage over other sewing machines in this budget range. While there is a detachable front section on the machine, it can not be used for storage due to the compact design. While this does not really affect the machine, it can be a little inconvenient and is kind of a pointless feature. See here for other ways to store your sewing equipment. Brother has been a well established business for over one hundred years and has been invested in the sewing industry for half that time. While they are now mostly known for their technological solutions in office supplies, they have transferred that technical knowledge over to their sewing machines. It would be hard to find a sewing machine that is as easy to use as the Brother LS14. Due to it been a budget sewing machine and therefore rather limited in terms of features, it is obviously going to be far easier to use than a computerised sewing machine. It is however, the limitations of the Brother LS14 that make it a good model for both beginners and kids. To select a stitch all that has to be done is to simply turn the dial to the required stitch, it couldn’t be easier. For more information on how to operate the LS14, see the official manual from Brother. Stitches and ButtonholesPurchasing additional feet is not necessary unless you are considering more adventurous creative stitching which this machine is not really designed for.

This machine provides a variety of zig zag stitches which can be used to close open edges of fabrics preventing it from fraying. This is a handy stitch to use during dressmaking or general clothes making projects. The Brother LS14 has basic features such as a Free Arm with Removable Cover, Standard Foot Pedal, and an Inbuilt light for safe and easy sewing. Reverse stitches, used for securing the thread in the fabric at the beginning and end of a stitching line, are created with a Reverse Lever. This sewing machine has a free arm design, which provides easy access to the cuffs, collars, and other difficult-to-reach areas of garments. The LS14 also features a stitch length control dial, allowing users to adjust the stitch length according to their preferences. Most manufacturers choose the front-loading option, the difference between the two is with a top loading bobbin you can see the thread in the bobbin, this helps with keeping an eye on your thread just in case of snags or running low on cotton. Threading the bobbin is incredibly easy with instructions actual printed on the machine. Freehand stitching is not available on this sewing machine as the feed dogs that grip your fabric underneath cannot be lowered allowing freedom in stitching. In total there are four presser feet included when you buy the Brother AE1700. These are more geared towards making clothes, which is why I recommend this machine as a good choice for beginners and any budding fashionistas out there. It is also suitable for home furnishings and similar sewing projects and is a quite versatile machine. With big-name brands pushing out various machines to suit these growing needs, it can be overwhelming to choose the right sewing machine for you. The Brother AE1700 comes with a 51 watt motor similar to the Brother AE2500. Compared to the similar priced Singer 1507, which has a 85 watt motor, the difference in power is noticeable. That been said, you will have no problems sewing through multiple layers with this machine. Brother are well-known for their high-quality motors and although they may be less powerful in terms of Wattage than similar priced machines, they are always capable of doing their job.
