About this deal

It's a thought provoking book and I have no doubt that it will help some people but I fear that he's fallen into the same trap as the very people he despises. At times, he encourages the reader to come to the book with an open mind and make their own decisions but then hammers home his point of view with a zeal which many preachers would envy! At one point, he had me seriously doubting my own, carefully thought out and examined map of the world. Now, that's not a bad thing - I believe we should all question our belief systems from time to time - but I'm concerned that his arguments are so forceful that it leaves a novice of self-exploration in danger of taking everything he says as gospel. Something which I'm sure, he'd rather they didn't. After all - none of us are "right" and he's the first person to say that the stories we tell ourselves are just that - fiction. UK and Ireland tour based on the 'Secret' show [75] Included a run at the Playhouse Theatre, London.

Brown states that he uses a variety of methods to achieve his illusions including traditional magic/conjuring techniques, memory techniques, hypnosis, body language reading, cognitive psychology, cold reading, and psychological, subliminal (specifically the use of PWA; "perception without awareness"), and ideomotor suggestion. Others additionally ascribe methods to him that he denies, ranging from the pseudoscience neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to paid actors. [40] I've loved a few shows I've seen of Derren Brown's: 'Miracle', 'Russian Roulette', 'Sacrifice', and 'How to Win the Lottery', but this is the first book I've read of his and I'm just completely in awe of his brilliance. The cornerstone of Aurelius’ Stoicism was a theory of human emotions. According to the philosophical emperor, emotions are anything but permanent and are constantly changing in reaction to external events. As Joseph Campbell wrote about middle age, ‘There is perhaps nothing worse than reaching the top of the ladder and discovering that you’re on the wrong wall.” Derren Brown: Sacrifice" Launches Exclusively on Netflix this Friday, 19th October 2018". Its lessons challenge us to think differently about the meaning of happiness and how we can over overcome anxiety in a difficult world. (...) Málokdo najde správného partnera, bez toho, aby si prošel bolestí ztráty prvního. (...) Být šťastný by nás zastavilo v rozkvětu." Next time you find yourself confronted with a problem, ask yourself into which category it falls. If it concerns your thoughts and actions, you can try to change it; if it concerns anything else, accept that it’s beyond your control and move on.

Maybe due to the overwhelming amount of intellect and wisdom this book provides, I imagine this would be even more thoroughly enjoyed a second time round, and I do indeed feel somewhat happier with the knowledge I've taken in it from it after just oneA great summary of the much longer "Happy". The earlier book was my introduction to Stoicism, and I'll be eternally greatful for it. I have read philosophy widely (but have yet a lot to learn), but as a "practical" philosophy Stoicism is hard to beat. Not that it's not without its problems, but still for what it gives its worth it. You can’t change the past, and dwelling on it makes you miserable. But it doesn’t have to be this way. a b c d "Stage & Screen: 2003-04 UK Tour 'Derren Brown: Live' ". Derren Brown . Retrieved 10 October 2021. I liked how the book was structured. Many great mental models to help with lowering anxiety and becoming more of who you truly are. Happy helped me to change my outlook. I went from unhelpful, negative thoughts to being OK and at peace. Brown has faced allegations of using stooges in his work. Viewers complained that the subject of Apocalypse was an actor, pointing to his CastingCallPro account as evidence. Brown dismissed these allegations as conspiracy theories and then responded directly, calling them untrue and hurtful. [30] [31] Other appearances [ edit ] Witty, useful and beautifully written... this book grapples expansively with the most profound questions any of us face The Sunday Times Zápisky; volný a spontánní překlad, namíchaný s vlastními myšlenkami, takže všem, kdo budou mít připomínky a protesty dlužím čelo; ale to taky patří k procesu, udělat ze sebe veřejně idiota (a zase Kafka):This is a life-changing book, especially the first part. The author so eloquently presents to you in such an empathetic way how you can consider living your life by applying a few Stoic principles such that you experience more peace with yourself and other people. I could immediately apply his words into a stressful situation in my life and felt a great relief. He wrote really well. This could be a PhD - the amount of thought he put into integrating old thoughts from modern thoughts, covering both breadth and depth. I was so happy to have found this book. Thank you, Derren Brown, for sharing your insights and wisdom with us. Absolute gem of a book ! I would highly recommend this to anyone. In a condensed version of “happy”, Derren explores the philosophical belief of Stoicism and how it can lead to a more fulfilling, meaningful and despite not aiming for it, happier life. This book is filled with powerful quotes, moving anecdotes and poetic wording and can easily be read in a day. Having said that though, this book is best enjoyed when it is savoured and not rushed. Public complaints that Russian Roulette was distasteful, made light of suicide, and promoted gun culture were ultimately rejected by Ofcom on the basis that the context (a post- watershed magic show) was enough and that the warnings given were sufficient. Additionally, the use of a 15-minute time delay ensured no viewer would have seen the result of any mistake. [19] The police had also warned that the show might inspire copycat acts. In an interview in New Scientist in 2005, when asked how he "acquired his psychological skills", Brown says that he learnt skills as a hypnotist, which he was not sure how to apply until he started performing close-up magic. When asked whether he is able to detect lies, Brown claimed to be able to read subtle cues such as micro-muscle movements that indicate to him if someone is lying. Concerning his apparent success at hypnotising people, he stated that he can normally spot a suggestible type of person and chooses that person to be his participant. He believes that the presence of a television camera also increases suggestibility. [41]His treatment of death is also good and I think will bring comfort to some people - but not all. He's adamant that there is no afterlife (a belief I can't share) which I found a bit sad, but that said, the rest of his treatment of the subject is constructive. I guess he's a humanist - which is fine by me -and for anyone who doesn't believe in "something beyond" I think it will be of great help. The ending was a bit abrupt and I thought could be written a bit better so as not to undermine all the hard work he did in the first part to help someone be in control of their emotions. It felt like at the end, it was all let loose, it doesn't quite matter, it was also important to listen to how you feel, and follow those stories where they lead... when in the first part, he put such a strong case for watching out for those stories and then later on choosing your own story. We might never rid ourselves of a lingering anxiety regarding our death; this is a kind of tax we pay in return for self-awareness.”
