At the age of eight, Bruce Wayne, the son of billionaire philanthropists, witnessed the murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha, during a mugging on the street. The event left him traumatized and mentally scarred for the rest of his life. Bruce was placed in the care of his family's butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Over the years, Bruce slowly turned the pain and trauma he sustained into a burning fuel for a lifelong obsession, as he underwent rigorous training in mental and physical conditioning. Having observed the rampant crime and corruption in Gotham City, Wayne swore an oath to dedicate his entire life to fighting crime, in a bid to avenge the murder of his parents, while being guided by his self-enforced moral code to never kill and to refrain from using firearms (which he detested, as the tool of his parents' murder). Inspired by his childhood fear of bats, Wayne reasoned that he could use that fear against the criminals he faced, and adopted the identity of 'The Batman', a feared, near-mythical bat-like vigilante. The late 1980s and very early 1990s were a time of transition for American animation. Bluth Studios was in decline and near bankruptcy. Hanna-Barbera too was facing financial difficulties. But The Simpsons had just premiered on Fox and the “Disney Renaissance” was just beginning with The Little Mermaid (1989). Warner Bros. Animation was experiencing something of a rebirth as well with Tiny Toon Adventures, thanks to an assist by Steven Spielberg. Even so, animation in the States was still heavily biased towards light and silly fare directed mostly at preteens. The Heart of Batman runs over an hour in length and talks to dozens of those involved with the show, touching on just about every aspect of what made it so good. GameSpot previously debuted a clip that focused on the villains the series created and developed. If that clip is the kind of thing that interests you, you cannot miss the full documentary. Batman investigates the appearance of a werewolf-like creature in Gotham, not realizing that the monster happens to be one of Bruce Wayne's associates — Anthony Romulus, ex-Olympic champion. Behind the scheme is twisted chemist Professor Milo. Just before Harvey Dent is to undergo surgery to fix the damage to his face in the hopes that it will give him the mental stability needed to erase his Two-Face persona, he is kidnapped by a gang with an unknown leader. Batman and Robin split up to find who abducted Bruce Wayne's old friend, suspecting that the Penguin or Rupert Thorne may be behind the kidnapping. Note: Loosely based on "A Vow from the Grave" by Dennis O'Neil. This episode adapted the comic book story with the inclusion of a separate Killer Croc story.Among the villains introduced this season are the Joker (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson), the Penguin (voiced by Tom Kenny), Catwoman (voiced by Gina Gershon), Mr. Freeze (voiced by Clancy Brown), Firefly (voiced by Jason Marsden), the Ventriloquist and Scarface (voiced by Dan Castellaneta), Man-Bat (voiced by Peter MacNicol), Cluemaster (voiced by Glenn Shadix), and Bane (voiced by Joaquim de Almeida in the first appearance, Ron Perlman in the second, and Clancy Brown in the third). The success of the Warner Archive Collection’s 2017 Blu-ray release of the sequel films Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993 – reviewed here) and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1989 - reviewed here) apparently convinced the studio that there was significant fan interest in a Blu-ray box set of the entire series. And so the studio has now released exactly that.

So, we know how amazing Batman: The Animated Series is, but what about the actual Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-ray release of the series? Honestly, whatever expectations I had were easily surpassed over and over when making my way through the collection. During a fight with some gangsters at a construction yard, Batman and Robin learn the name of their boss: Billy Marin. While Robin looks forward to going up against Marin, Batman becomes distant and doesn't allow Robin to accompany him on the search for Marin, leading to a falling out at the Batcave. Robin investigates with the Batcomputer and soon realizes that Billy Marin is not the boss' real name. Rather, it is an alias of Tony Zucco, the man who killed his parents John and Mary Grayson. Batman chose not to tell Robin out of concern that he would desire vengeance against Zucco. a b "Batman: The Animated Series". Emmys.com. Academy of Television Arts & Sciences .
