About this deal

Even though I knew the outcome of this story I still was so invested in her journey through unhappiness and addiction. The story is complex and there is the mothers point of view, the findings in her own therapy, dozens of details and quotes from Drews therapists and other observations that do deserve to be included to establish timelines and round out the story.

It is a difficult read also and offers remarkable parallels in places to Drew Barrymore but from another childhood star. Not knowing much about Drew Barrymore as a person but liking her work I jumped at reading this when I got the chance. First, about the physical book, it arrived promptly, in "good condition" and as described, clean, without markings or highlighting, no missing pages or broken spine.Although I do not know Drew personally, I am proud of her for writing this book, for trying to reach out to other children who may be in a similar situation, and for trying to explain that slowly but surely things can get better if you ask for help. It gave a lot of insight of what she went through as a child star her issues with drugs and how she came through the ordeal.

That does not mean she can not and has not learned to let go of her deepest pain and embrace the productive and loving life we all want for her. And as I’m a football fanatic, I’ve read so many footballer autobiographies and while there’s the odd exception, they are usually spectacularly dull! Drew goes into the details of her hard and emotionally lacking relationship with her parents, and how she struggles with being honest with sobriety at the tender age of 12.

While I’m sure the book might’ve been written a little better had she been older when she wrote it, it was interesting to get a glimpse into her life not long after the start of her battle with drugs and alcohol. I have to say, at one point (in the wee hours the day before my essay was due) looking at Drew through an existential lens almost broke my brain.

Even though it was written many years ago, I think it would benefit both those struggling in addiction as well as the ones who help them. I am looking forward to reading her book wildflower and seeing how her life has improved since her teenage years. Drew Blyth Barrymore is an American actress, film producer, director, photographer, entrepreneur, and author. This piece I related to the most, since at first, she so badly wanted her father to be her hero and a faithful, loving father.Thank you for saving me from having to look at these ever – the stuff from Wildflower is just cringey when it’s even remotely comprehensible!

Drew takes us through her journey of self-destruction, drug and alcohol abuse, and her struggle to become sober and understand herself and her issues better. She gave such good press when she released the book – the stories she told in interviews were funny and sad and everything in between, which makes me quite sure she should stick to being Drew, not writing about Drew! I wasn't sure if I would like this book since it was written so long ago and by someone so young, but it stands the test of time.

Drew, as she says, will live the rest of her life on the brink of disaster, from minute to minute and hour to hour. More desperately than life itself, Drew wanted a father that loved her, something she never even came close to. Her intention is to explain the difficulties of addiction and try to help others, as well as to give an honest account before others smeared her name with false assumptions and inaccuracies. At the time of publication of this book, her relationship with her mother had been progressing, although since this book came out, it is a known fact that her relationship with her mum has been strained.
