About this deal

Introduction: Oral bicarbonate loading improves the buffering of metabolic acidosis and may improve exercise performance but can also result in gastric distress. Momentous’ PR Lotion contains a novel composition intended to provide a transdermal delivery vehicle for sodium bicarbonate which could allow the same ergogenic effect without the gastric distress. The present study explored the effect of transdermal delivery of sodium bicarbonate in a resting condition.Dr. Jason Siegler (University of Western Australia) examined the effect of PR Lotion on blood lactate concentration and performance outcomes with repeated 30 second cycling intervals at 120% of peak power (30 second rest) to exhaustion. A similar rise in blood lactate levels was observed compared to oral sodium bicarbonate ingestion (standard dose of 0.3g/kg body weight). Although the study did not observe the typical increase in blood bicarbonate (or increase in blood pH) usually associated with sodium bicarbonate ingestion, the results suggest PR Lotion was as effective as ingesting sodium bicarbonate at buffering H+ production in the muscle at high intensities. Furthermore, the cyclists performed similarly (defined by cumulative cycling time) compared to oral sodium bicarbonate ingestion. Similar performance outcomes, combined with the observation that blood lactate values were similar, suggests PR Lotion is an effective ergogenic aid during high intensity or repeated bouts of high intensity exercise. As the sets progressed and the weights increased, I did notice something: I was breathing just as hard as ever, but my legs still felt primed for more. Call it a fluke. Call it a placebo. IDK, but the fatigue I would normally experience just wasn’t there, particularly in my calves. Two days before the first session, all of the participants performed a 20-minute time trial (TT) to set and calibrate the power of the intervals for the ensuing testing sessions. For the testing sessions, the participant was instructed to apply a tablespoon of assigned lotion per leg 30 minutes prior to beginning a warm-up on a smart indoor bike trainer. The warm-up lasted six minutes, and then the participant began the test: a 30-second interval at 140% of their TT power followed by a 20-second rest interval, and the pattern repeated until the participant could complete the work interval. Concentrations of K + and Na + were measured in dialysate and serum via flame photometry (BWB Technologies United States, Evans Mill, NY, United States) per manufacturer’s instructions. To eliminate intersample variance, all samples were thawed once and analyzed in the same run by a single technician. Sample results were inspected for visual stability across the sample run time and all samples with reported instability were re-processed. Sample results were recorded in millimolar (mM) concentrations in duplicate. 2.3 Statistical analysis

Even though the performance benefits of bicarbonate are clear, the potential for negative side effects in the gut can significantly discourage athletes from ingesting sodium bicarbonate. In fact, to combat the negative side effects, athletes include extensive and sometimes tedious protocols or strategies for sodium bicarbonate consumption into their pre-training or pre-competition routine. The timing of ingestion before exercise, the quantity of sodium bicarb ingested, and the “loading” strategy are all necessary considerations to carefully plan before ingesting sodium bicarbonate for the performance benefits without the negative side effects. Adding to the complexity, ingestion strategies need to be highly personalized to each athlete, as individuals can have varying responses or sensitivities to oral sodium bicarbonate. Research has shown the lotion to help athletes complete 25% more high-intensity intervals to exhaustion and reduce DOMS (post-workout muscle soreness) by 53%

Why does it work (if it works)?

All studies were approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Oregon and were performed in accordance with the principles outlined by the Declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects after a verbal and written briefing of all experimental procedures. 2.2 Study design So what is this magical lotion? It’s essentially nothing more than a topical delivery of sodium bicarbonate, more commonly referred to as baking soda. As it turns out, athletes have used baking soda for decades – it’s one of the most extensively studied ergogenic aids out there. But why would baking soda of all things improve performance? As the first line of defense for preserving acid-base balance during exercise, bicarbonate (HCO3-) is a critically important electrolyte for optimal neuromuscular function. In fact, over 40 years of scientific research (and athlete practice) overwhelmingly supports the benefits of sodium bicarbonate ingestion for improving acid-base balance and enhancing human performance in sport. Despite the clear evidence for performance benefits, gastrointestinal distress is a common side effect. This makes sodium bicarbonate ingestion impractical for most athletes to use regularly.
