I mean I shouldn’t complain; it quite clearly says hints of violet and jasmine, but it really detracts and distracts me from the palate. To mark 100 years since the very first blend of Antique XO was created by Georges Hine in 1920, the Hine Antique XO 100th Anniversary 1920-2020 is a very limited edition cuvée. With so much depth the layers in Hine Antique XO just keep going, where one sip is like working your way through pages and pages of a good book, you don’t realise how much time has passed reading because you’ve become some engrossed by the tale. Thanks to millions of years of fossilization dating back to the Jurassic period, the soil in this region is remarkably chalky, fine, with a unique maritime climate that receives plenty of sunlight.Until 2018, you could label a Cognac as XO after only six years of ageing, but now the minimum period of maturation is a decade. Since my first bottle of Hine Rare,I have tried Courvoisier, Frapin, Hennessy, Maxime Trijol,amongst others. The sweeter elements are always held in check by toasted, nutty notes and an unmistakable tang of rancio. Nose: Spicy and peppery, fruity, and very rich, cinnamon, nutmeg, and gentle floral aroma - almost lavender.
