About this deal

It’s a simple variation on the established flip and twist screens, generally found on larger, SLR-style, cameras, but is cheaper to produce and more compact. Unfortunately it’s also more cumbersome. With a whopping 15 built-in effects, the MV800 has the most in-depth effects mode we've ever seen on a camera. Our scoring rubric doesn't even allow us to award as many points as we think this camera deserves for these fun extras. score_bars comp_num="2", scores="Color Score, Noise Score, Resolution Score, Video Color Score, Video Sharpness Score, Stabilization Score"}} COMP 3

The in-camera editing suite covers most of the basics—crops, rotation, contrast, brightness, and red-eye correction. It has one of the best effects modes we've ever seen on a camera, but they can't be applied after a shot has already been taken. Featuring advanced creative functionality and Samsung’s Wi-Fi connectivity, the MV900F is a leader in the compact camera category. With an F2.5 bright lens to capture crisp, detailed photos even in low-lit environments, a powerful 16.3M pixels BSI CMOS sensor that produces high-quality photos and video, and a wider 25mm lens for fully framed images, the MV900F is a high-performing and versatile camera. The 5x optical zoom also makes it easy to shoot distance subjects. Thanks to the vagaries of image processing, the signal-to-noise ratio doesn't count for everything, but we still confidently rank the MV800 as a below-average noise performer. The sensor output is rougher than its competitors' even at lower levels, and the noise reduction algorithm is too heavy-handed for our liking.

Out of the comparison group, the MV800 scored the lowest in our noise tests. However, looking at the crops, we don't think that it's really the worst performer of the group. The Canon ELPH 500 HS and Samsung PL120 both scored better, and their shots do look superior to the MV800's at higher ISO settings. But the Casio Tryx earned the best noise score in our group, yet its photos look atrocious. It uses so much destructive noise reduction that it's difficult to see what the photo was supposed to be in the first place. Like the ST95, the MV800 has shoehorned in a 5x optical zoom, here starting out a usefully wide angle 26mm (in 35m terms) and running up to 130mm at the telephoto end, with a maximum aperture of f/3.3. Resolution is 16.1 effective megapixels in total from a 16.4MP 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, while video resolution is fixed at 1280x720 pixels. Whilst that falls short of Full HD, there is at least an HDMI output, alongside the dual USB/AV output in a shared port hidden under a plastic side panel. There's also four slots for the built-in mono speaker. It's worth noting that the MV800's color scores are in the same ballpark as many point-and-shoots' standard color settings; those cameras just also have several other color profiles, at least one of which is usually much more accurate than the default modes. Noise As with the SH100, image quality on the MV800 is generally pretty good. Of course, once you start examining images at 100% and the limitations of the small sensor do become apparent especially at higher sensitivity settings, but viewed at regular monitor sizes (or at smaller print sizes) the MV800 produces bright, natural looking images that we suspect the vast majority of users will be more than happy with. Slightly lower down on the scale of usefulness is a Pose Guide mode that serves up an on-screen outline of a classic model pose for you to arrange your subject into, an Intelligent Portrait mode that takes three shots for the price of one, and a Face Zoom feature that automatically zooms in when it detects a face to get a slightly tighter crop of your subject. The Casio Tryx is the only other small camera on the market that has an adjustable LCD, and it costs about as much as the MV800, so it's probably the most appropriate comparison point. Like all of the Samsung point-and-shoots we've seen, the MV800 only has one color mode. Sharpness, contrast, and saturation are all adjustable in the MV800's Program mode, but there are no other color presets, and no way to adjust the overall accuracy. Any serious changes will have to be made with PC-based photo software. Normal: 80cm - Infinity(Wide) / 150cm - infinity (Tele) , Macro: 5 - 80cm (Wide) / 100- 150cm (Tele), Auto Macro: 5cm - Infinity (Wide) / 100cm - Infinity (Tele) Press Release: Samsung’s MV900F Camera Delivers Beautiful Portraits from Any Angle, Plus Built-In Wi-Fi Sharing On-the-Go EasyIt also applies obvious sharpening, especially at the wide angle. The 4.5mm crops below look blurry, particularly on the right side of the frame. But the MV800 adds a dark line where the sharp edge should be, which improves the contrast from a regular viewing distance, and fools image-testing software into thinking that the edge is actually well defined. To be fair, most cameras do this to a certain degree, and the MV800 is far from the most egregious example we've seen. The innovative Live Panorama function, meanwhile, enables easy photography of large groups by simply holding down the shutter button, then previewing the whole scene that’s being captured, via the LCD. Moreover, by simply connecting the Samsung MV800 to a 3D HDTV, images and panoramic shots can be viewed in outstanding 3D in-depth quality instantly.

The MV800 camera builds on the success of Samsung’s DualView technology and is the first premium compact model to feature a 3.0” Wide Flip-out touch-screen LCD Display. Samsung has designed the device in response to evolving consumer demands for maximum flexibility, ease-of-use, creativity and style. The MV800 surprised us with its great resolution scores—the best in the comparison group overall, as well as in each individual resolution test. This high ranking does come with a few caveats, but from what we can tell, the MV800 earned its high scores mostly fair and square, without too much software-based funny business. More on how we test resolution. Distortion ({{product.raw_scores['Distortion Score']}}) The built in Pose Guide function advises users how to best get into position with line drawings on the LCD screen, so consumers can capture the optimum image from any angle. The device also provides the perfect picture in real time, with the easy-to-navigate Photo Editor function, allowing users to edit and rotate the image on the move. Loved ones and friends will also appreciate the Beauty Shot feature which edits out any imperfections, resulting in a flawless photo one can treasure and share forever. According to the specs, it doesn't have stereo sound recording, but all the other things I'm looking for.
