About this deal

With multiple PoVs (thankfully the chapters are short and concise) and an engaging narrative, though a bit disjointed between chapters, Peter Swanson’s Nine Lives is an interesting read. I loved it and was a little afeared to read this because it is loosely based on a book by another of my favourite authors, Agatha Christie - And Then There were None. Jessica Winslow is the only member of law enforcement on the list, however, so her impending demise leads to a sense of hyper vigilance and determination to figure out the nexus between the group and how to stop the perp before she meets a devastating end. I loved that book, and get it, the author's a fan, but I started to roll my eyes at how many times it was mentioned, plus spoilers for those who've not yet read that! I appreciate what he was trying to do, but NOBODY needs a constant reminder in a situation like this one.I found the reveal behind what was linking these people together a bit of a letdown, and the killer’s motive was lame, but I was surprised by one twist.

One of her earliest childhood memories is getting to read to her kindergarten class (“See The Fly Fly” by Catherine Chase). The author is once again making links between popular mystery books and his story (like Eight Perfect Murders) which is fine but I wouldn't want it to become a thing. The thing that I like the most about Peter Swanson, beyond the ability he has to totally floor me, is that he always crafts mysteries that have just enough twists to be interesting without going into wholly farfetched territory. As people start being killed there is a race to try and find out what they have in common, and who is behind this.

Overall I didn’t think this was nearly as amazing as “The Kind Worth Killing” but it’s still a good, quick read and I enjoyed it. But for the nine complete strangers who receive it - each of them recognising just one name, their own, on the enclosed list - it will be the most life altering letter they ever receive. But for the nine complete strangers who receive it – each of them recognising just one name, their own, on the enclosed list – it will be the most life altering letter they ever receive. Swanson ( Every Vow You Break) neatly riffs on Agatha Christie’s classic And Then There Were None in this taut thriller. The overall ending was a little lackluster, there is an epilogue chapter that just sort of seemed unnecessary.

Nine people receive a typed list of nine names, their own name plus eight others that they have never heard of or met before. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. Even though I have not read Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, which this book pays homage to, I absolutely loved Peter Swanson’s take on it and found myself hooked right from the get-go. I liked trying to figure out why these strangers were on this list, who would survive, and wanted to know who the killer was, it really puzzled me!I will not spoil any of the mastery that Peter Swanson spins together here, but he does come up with a backstory that connects everything in such a way that your head will be spinning. If you carefully follow the narrative from the very beginning, you'll notice some not-so-subtle hints that are very revealing, even before the first murder takes place. It’s very clearly inspired by Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” so you can tell where the overall theme meshes with that: nine strangers receive a list with all of their names on it but do not know each other or what connects them all. A list with nine names is posted to each of the people named on it, who seemingly have no connection to each other. When nine strangers receive an anonymous letter listing nine seemingly random names, some recipients are alarmed, whereas others choose to ignore it…until they start being killed off, one by one.
