About this deal

Paul Hetherington, The Buzz "This book is ideal for anyone interested in insects but not wanting to restrict themselves to a particular group. This book helps you take your first steps with the dragonflies and damselflies of Britain and Ireland and enables you to confidently identify most of the species that you initially encounter.

They offer a series of visual choices that guide the reader, but it is these sections that take up space and add to the volume of the book, thus decreasing the number of species accounts that it can contain. Like many naturalists my delving into the world of insects started with butterflies, then moths and dragonflies aided at the time by guides by Chinery, which I still have. The most complete guide to insects of Britain and Ireland ever produced, this revised and expanded edition incorporates recent taxonomic changes. There's too many species to list here but be assured the best of the images obtained during the year will be featured - from common residents to mazing rarities. Starting with a 'golden' theme, great winter birds moving on to locations including Vancouver, New England, Scotland and the Farne islands all with new images. The importance of fieldcraft and the best approach to watching them, with tips on photography is covered. Over 1500 species are illustrated with information on larvae, when and where to look for each species and highlights differences between similar species. My overall feeling is that Britain's insects is very good value for money but should be regarded as an introduction to the subject. With around 25,000 species of insect in Britain and Ireland alone, it’s understandable to see why many of these books fall short.

This talk takes a look at what’s involved in bird photography, numerous localities and of course – plenty of interesting birds! This is not a specific site for what's about in Shropshire but you can guarantee if there is a decent bird about - I'll be there! A superb guide for everyone from the entomological generalist to the interested with an enquiring mind. Using images (taken under schedule 1 licence) the focus is on the 2010 breeding season capturing the development of chicks from day 1 to fledging. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password.

All things to all people; it is crammed with snippets of information: life cycles, descriptions, maps, definitions, status, distribution, seasonality, habitat, food plants, behaviour, etc. Challenges indeed, but ones that the WILDGuides take in their stride and deal with exceptionally well. Britain’s Insects: a field guide to the insects of Great Britain and Ireland is published by Princeton University Press (on 8 June 2021).My VP list is up to 150 species and the ‘Century’ refers to the 100+ species now photographed as decent portraits in their own right!
