Having used this lens in deserts and generally in hazy conditions in Dubai’s summer, Nikon’s weather sealing claims for this lens holds up. This lens is good enough—that S designation is well deserved—that it introduces a clear conundrum for mid-range zoom lens users. The Nikon Z9 incredible imaging power lets you record exquisite full-frame 8K video and time-lapse movies in-camera.After about two months of using this lens, it suffered a nasty fall onto the pavement, straight onto its front element. which means that you can get really nice subject isolation at the longer focal lengths and is also really nice for flowers, butterflies, bees etc where you don’t need a full 1:1 macro. This lens is for photographers looking for the ideal walkabout lens that can perform consistently in various situations, as well as those who want more reach than 70mm. The Z-mount lens also gets Nano and Arneo coating to reduce flare and ghosting, plus fluorine coating on the front element to better shed dust and water.

With the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens set to its maximum aperture, there is some very obvious light fall-off in the corners, which you'll either need to correct in post-processing or stop-down the aperture to avoid. Image quality throughout the focal range is really good, and a tad sharper at 70mm compared to the Z 24-70mm f4 S lens. also has reasonably good performance, but that variable aperture means you aren't exactly comparing apples with apples at 50mm-120mm; you're always at least a stop down, and stopping down improves the 24-120mm f/4 S further, as you'd expect. If it suffers a hard bump or a small drop when the barrel is extended, the 24-120mm f/4 S stands a higher risk of decentering compared to some lenses. It saves weight compared to metal, doesn’t get as cold in chilly conditions, and (depending on the lens) can be more durable/resistant to dents and dings over time. It’s a constant pattern: I pass a photographer out in nature, glance at their camera, and inevitably see something like an 18-55mm or 24-105mm mounted to their camera. The hood locks into place and is reversible so you can reduce the size of the lens for transporting it and storing it at a smaller size. A handful of shots look like they missed AF that morning but, apart from that, it continued to work reasonably well. Now granted, I'm not manually focusing as often as I used to with the Nikon DSLRs, as I'm finding I don't have to override the autofocus system nearly as much with the Z System cameras, but still, cognitive dissonances are cognitive dissonances, and should be avoided in design foundations.
