Released in 2013 as a travel retail exclusive, the Talisker Dark Storm is a direct sibling to the Talisker Storm. The difference here, besides a larger bottle size, is that the casks used to age the whisky are heavily charred. The differences between the regular Storm and this one lead us to wonder if there are any age differences between the two or other factors besides the charring. Because Talisker is operated by Diageo, who are can be very opaque with product details, not many specifics of any kind are known about the whisky. Other releases include the Talisker 57 North whisky. There is also a Talisker Dark Storm that was released as a travel retail special. Dark Storm was matured in heavily charred casks compared to the standard Storm release.

I couldn’t find more details about cask types being used. Talisker Storm (not the dark one) was aged in refill and toasted American oak casks, so my guess is that Dark Storm has American oak influence as well. Johnny I hardly knew ye! Dark Storm has been matured in heavily charred oak casks, a method more typical with American whiskey maturation rather than Scotch. These casks give more smoke to that signature Talisker palate, which is already intense. Palate (undiluted): very soft arrival, more red fruit, developing to dry peat smoke (think burning leaves), and a little minerality.

Today I am looking at the 3rd of my mini Talisker bottles, and it is time for the Talisker Storm single malt whisky. The Talisker 10 yo whisky easily makes it onto my top 10 desert island drams. I love the smoky, creamy notes of this release. It is affordable and bursts with flavour. I enjoyed the Talisker Skye but found it a bit rough around the edges. With water added, there's a floral or herbal note that pops up, fresh thyme maybe. A bit of honey. The peat smoke is still there with water, but the fruitiness changes. It tastes more like pears, and maybe a touch of orange. With water, the chalky minerality that defines Talisker for me is more evident. I prefer this with water. I have to admit, the 10 Year Old Talisker is more my style. Perhaps I'm curmudgeonly, but I prefer my Talisker with less fruitiness and more pepper, brine, smoke, and wet slate. Actually I think that 85 points for my tasting of Dark Storm out of a Glencairn glass might have been a little generous, influenced by how much I liked Dark Storm when tasted in the snifters. Talisker Dark Storm is dubbed as the smokiest single malt produced by the isle of Skye distillery. But for lovers of peat, how does it fare?Finish: long slow fade-out, with too much bitterness arriving late.This bitterness could be coming from any combination of peat, wood, or sherry. Water added lessened the bitterness.
