About this deal

Bobbi Brown has decades of experience as a makeup artist/stylist and, of course, the creator of her own makeup and skin care line (which is fab). Make-Up Designory's Beauty Make-Up is pretty straight-forward---base, brows, eyes, cheeks, lips---but it includes sections on applying makeup to mature models, applying makeup via airbrush, and working with brides. You get the sense that they borrowed from their live classes to write the book, and that's a good thing. There's a (very) small chapter on actually working in the beauty biz, but it's not long enough for us to include it in our section titled... Books for Aspiring Makeup Artists and the Business End of Things Barnes followed up About Face’s success with Face to Face, another equally tantalizing makeup tutorial featuring the incomparable, Kim Kardashian, on the cover. Reyna has created a series of makeup chart books, but this is the only other one I will mention here (they’re all good, though).

Last, but not least, here’s my favorite makeup book of all times: Be Your Own Makeup Artist . I am so proud to have written and published this book, and am SO honored that it has made it’s way into cosmetology school curriculum. Jemma Kidd is many things: makeup artist, fashion model, and finally, Marchioness of Duoro. If you're an American (and most of the writers of MakeupArtistEssentials.com are American, by the way---in fact, most live in Brooklyn, NY, the least royal place in all of the United States), please allow us to unravel that: a Marchioness is the wife of a Marquess, and a Marquess is an English nobleman of hereditary rank. Jemma is married to Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Douro, and that makes her the Marchioness. If you want to go more natural and avoid chemicals, this is the perfect guide! The recipes are super easy, and there are lots of them, so you can spend a lot of time going through this book.

Play Up the Eyes

This book is for the person who wants to look as fantastic as they feel. You’ll learn to approach makeup as a choice and a means of expression, not a need. There is no fancy vocabulary or industry jargon to decipher. Everything is simple and easy, just the way it should be!

Aucoin also gives a great introduction at the beginning of the book which focuses on tools, face shapes, etc. It’s loaded with interesting information! Kevyn’s tips and techniques are timeless and accessible. If you’re going to be a makeup artist, this is the book for you. I believe that if you can practice and master the looks he teaches you, you will be able to handle pretty much anything the industry throws at you. This is the quintessential makeup lover’s coffee table book. With gorgeous photography, the Story of Makeup chronicles how painting the face and body is one of the oldest global social practices. She followed up this bestselling bookwith her second, also well-received: Jemma Kidd Make-Up Secrets: Solutions to Every Woman’s Beauty Issues and Make-Up Dilemmas For better or worse, this book feels like a textbook---something that you might have to read in school. So, it may be a little less seductive than makeup books that feature colorful images and beautiful models. BUT. The subject matter is something you love, so it's probably an easier read. Working on eye looks is a practice all its own, so this chart book dedicated to just eyes is a great way to practice.Classic Beauty is a bit more comprehensive than Face Paint, and I consider it to be a great reference book. It shows how history has molded accepted beauty rituals and patterns and the changes in cosmetics over the years. I don’t know about you, but I find that kind of thing SO fascinating! I really wanted to create a no-nonsense makeup book written for non-beauty professionals in the 21st century. Be Your Own Makeup Artist is for everyone who wants to learn how to shop for makeup and understand the what, where, why, and how behind their perfect makeup application (not a one-size-fits-all look). This is another book that focuses on the business side of makeup. We've included it because it's a more "nuts and bolts" approach to the career, and discusses building a kit, training, and portfolio building. In addition to tutorials, the Makeup Manual also has the “top beauty secrets only artists know, essential equipment to keep on hand, how to break into the business, and how to work with photographers and celebrities.” (source) On top of that, the book also features an awesome 40-day food diary that you can use to start living your most beautiful life as well as a bunch of fun charts and lists to fill out, prompts for self-reflection, recipe cards, de-stressing techniques, sleep tips, and more. It’s fantastic!

The Art of Makeup Can Be Studied: Makeup Artist Money Manual: A Simple, Step-by-step Guide to Your Long Lasting, Lucrative Career in Wedding Makeup Artistry, by Theresa Amundsen Since then, I’ve loved studying books on makeup application and I even took some courses in college to learn stage makeup and light prosthetic application. The course explores many topics: makeup techniques, career options, skincare, makeup tools, applying foundation and concealer, eyeliner techniques and more. We present a series of demonstrations featuring a professional makeup artist and a model to help you master the practical application of cosmetics and beauty techniques, including: mascara and eyeliner, eyebrow grooming, lip makeup, foundation and concealer, corrective makeup, contouring and building eyelashes. Sadly, Aucoin died very young---he developed a type of brain cancer called a pituitary tumor, and began severely abusing pain medication. In 2002, he died of kidney and liver failure related to his drug use. His story is both very sad and very inspiring. This is another book that doesn't really provide techniques or glossy how-to photos; if that's your interest, you should look at the Kevyn Aucoin book and the Chris Scott book above. How to Be a Professional Makeup Artist: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners provides just that: a kind of road map to a makeup artistry career. Did We Miss Any?
