It punishes players with REAL LIFE consequences, sucking away their life one hour at a time by making them play this game even longer! When I attempted this scenario he’d already made it to three pits by the time I’d closed all the gates, meaning seven proton streams were required to catch him. The last “Ghostbusters”-anything I played was the PC game, which is totally awesome and worth picking up. Inside the rulebook there’s a few pages of story that setup the basic narrative of the game, although the scenario cards drop the ball somewhat here which is a real shame. Luckily, although each member of the ghost catching crew starts off with the same abilities, as they progress through these increasingly difficult missions they can unlock better abilities by performing certain actions and gaining experience… so there’s a very light role-playing element here.

Single-Player is a new series designed to review tabletop games that can be played solo, as well as with friends. Each scenario takes place in the locations and environs of an apocalyptic New York City, built from game board tiles and populated by Ghosts. This means that by the time you’re facing off against big nasties like Slimer or the Marshmallow Man, your team members will feel more like individual characters, each with their own specialties, rather than just four carbon copies. That’s not to say that there isn’t strategy, though most of it will be coordinating with others on the use of your action points, maneuvers, and passive abilities.It didn’t take long for a follow-up, aptly named, Ghostbusters: The Board Game II, to become a reality, adding in characters from the 1989 sequel, including the Scoleri Brothers and Vigo the Carpathian, along with his undead army. The reason one catches and traps the bulk of Ghosts on the table is that that's the only way to put them back in the spirit world - if the spirit world is empty of Ghosts and you need to add another one to the map, you would instead lose the game. So, as the ghosts swarm out of the gate tokens around the map tiles, the players move their characters around and try to hit the ghosts with their proton packs. As it’s co-op, as well, I might see if I can convince my wife to try it out with me, but she isn’t a fan of the source material at all, so I’m not sure how successful I would be there!

This game is so meta that it doesn't actually punish the players for performing badly with in-game consequences. The caption on the photograph alludes to Winston's lack of sleep in The Real Ghostbusters episode " Mr. Therefore you will do better if working together, but sometimes the mission will make you wanna split off to cover more ground.

This makes enemy movement hard to predict, and so keeping proton streams locked becomes a weird little dance that can be both enjoyabe, and irritating if it goes on for too long. I’ve tried with two different groups of people, and while the results were different in detail, the overall experiences were the same. At the end of each round the Event die is rolled which has symbols matching the five different gate tokens inscribed upon its six sides. The game board is actually made up of ten different tiles that are placed and orientated based on the scenario card’s map.It’s the scenario cards that help spice up the somewhat mediocre gameplay, bringing in some twists and goals that make the game feel a little more interesting.
