About this deal

The only issue is that it can start to suffer from distortion at louder volumes, but we found it to be one of the best-value options if you’re really on a tight budget. Really impressive stuff. We make sure to test speaker against its chief competitors too for sound and features such as multi-room compatibility and app support, so you can be sure that the product is the best if we say it is. We live with these speakers in our homes to make sure that their performances are consistent, and we don't finalize our testing until we are certain of the sound quality. However, if you don’t have an Apple Music subscription, you’re rather limited when it comes to music streaming. You can't ask the HomePod mini to play anything through Spotify – that can only be enabled through AirPlay, and requires using your phone rather than the simpler method of asking Siri to play tunes with your voice. If there’s a single reason to buy the HomePod mini, it’s the sound quality, which delivered clear treble and smooth mids during our tests.

Another annoyance is that there’s no display, just a power indicator light, so you can’t see at a glance which source you’re connected to. Instead, the Soundbox vocalises source changes whenever you press the appropriate button on its tiny remote control, saying “HDMI”, “Optical” or “Bluetooth” before engaging. And the Soundbox is also only natively compatible with Dolby Digital Plus and not Dolby Atmos, (which is odd, considering Sky now broadcasts some Premier League football broadcasts with Atmos audio) or any form of DTS. Nevertheless, this should only be a problem if you’re only able to output a bit-streamed signal. When I tested with Blue Planet II and Star Wars VII – Force Awakens Blu-ray discs played through my Xbox One S, it processed the audio just fine. Sky Soundbox review: VerdictThere’s no equalizer in the app, and some fine print within it suggests not using one to begin with. You’re certainly free to do so from whichever source you’re playing music from, assuming they offer it, as most music streaming services don’t. The good news is that the New Soundboks sounds great — even better than we expected at louder volumes. Some distortion sets in at 10 and 11, which is to be expected, but we would only go that far if we were outside in more open areas. Take your music with you wherever you go with this Philips BT50B/00 portable speaker. Equipped with a built-in amplifier and a 3.81 cm driver, this wireless speaker ensures an immersive audio clarity while its compact and lightweight design makes it the perfect travel companion. Connect your smartphone or iPod to this speaker wirelessly via Bluetooth and play your favourite playlist wherever you are. It’s also powered by a rechargeable Li-po battery which offers up to six hours of playtime. Over the past few years, we’ve seen (and heard) everything from giant room-filling Bluetooth speakers to dinky travel options pass through our listening rooms, and many have impressed by offering great value for money, lengthy battery life, waterproofing and even engaging, capable audio quality. Of course, there are plenty of Bluetooth speakers out there that haven't cut the mustard, which is why our team of reviewers have created this handy guide detailing only the best Bluetooth speakers that are worth considering. With such high levels of performance, it's one of the best wireless Bluetooth speakers you can find on the market today at this price.

The app also allows access to the different sound profiles, meaning you can tailor the sound for different situations. The profiles are Bass+ (which enhances bass, obviously), Power (which conserves battery while optimizing sound), Indoor (for use inside), and a custom EQ setting giving you complete control over sound output. If you want more from the midrange and less from the treble, you can now tweak it thanks to a new EQ feature in the app, which adds significant value. For a nominal price hike over the launch price of the Flip 5, there’s certainly more detail here, too.

The New Soundboks is the ideal party speaker, but it's not cheap

We all love the complete theatre sound experience. There’s something about the floor-to-ceiling screen and the surround sound that takes the entire movie watching experience to the next level. If you are planning to build a home theatre, then you need effective home audio speakers to enhance your music experience. There is no Dolby Atmos, only Dolby Digital Plus. Sky says that its Sky+ service doesn’t support the surround-sound format and therefore not all of its customers would benefit. It also comes with a higher price tag than its predecessor because of the extra premium upgrades that have been made to it. As a result, the Era 100 no longer sits at the mid-tier wireless speaker level but instead has been moved to the more premium end of the spectrum. Sonus Faber is well-known for its high-priced, luxury hi-fi equipment and its latest product, the Sonus Faber Omnia, is no exception. This is a sleek, sophisticated and fairly big all-in-one system that’s easy-to-use thanks to comprehensive wireless connectivity, with built-in support for the major streaming services, AirPlay, Chromecast, and Roon.

Proof that you don't have to sacrifice a premium look and feel for portability, the Dali Katch G2's compact dimensions, stylish retractable travel handle, and 30-hour battery mean it could easily be your go-to travel speaker. At the default sound setting without bass boost or spatial audio engaged, I wasn't exactly wowed with sound quality (the bass is a bit underwhelming, the mids are recessed and there's a bit too much treble push). But as soon as you engage the bass boost and spatial audio, everything sounds more balanced and full. You can also tweak the sound profile further in the Soundcore companion app for iOS and Android.

What this all translates into is vastly improved sound, and while the Sonos One was mono only, the Era 100 distinguishes itself by providing a superb stereo experience. The bass is deeper and fuller, there's more clarity and detail throughout and even at higher volume, timing is excellent and the tonal balance is wonderfully even. It's predominantly a stationary, use-at-home type of product, but the Era 100's Bluetooth connectivity gives it more flexibility in use and makes it eligible for a spot on this list. When choosing a Bluetooth speaker, what it really comes down to is size and price. If you're looking for a very portable speaker, you'll want to get something very compact, but remember that smaller speakers usually produce less sound and bass than larger ones. So while there are plenty of mini Bluetooth speakers that deliver bigger sound than you might expect, they do have their sonic limitations. For a lot of people it's a question of finding a speaker that's not too big or too small -- one that travels well but also is capable of producing good sound for its size. But finding the best portable Bluetooth speaker also comes down to your budget.Take your gaming experience to the next level by bringing home a gaming speaker that’s not only compact but also powerful. The Soundboks app isn’t especially deep but it does have a few key features you would need to keep an eye on. The most important would the sound mode, split between Bass+, Power and Indoor. Bass+ is the most taxing on the battery, with a range of up to three hours per charge, but it’s also the loudest with the ability to go up to 126dB. Power prioritizes efficiency to keep the speaker loud, yet manage to eke out an extra two hours of battery. Indoor lowers the max loudness and extends the potential battery life to seven hours. Audio is really strong, too: bigger, punchier and louder than you’d expect from such a small box. Play Juiceby Lizzo and the Micro 2 does justice to the song’s upbeat tempo with the singer's vocals vibrantly portrayed. Midrange in particular is dealt with in a much more appealing manner than anything else we’ve seen at this price. All products are judged on a performance-per-pound basis and, as part of the process, put up against the current class leader(s) at that price point to see how they compare and to help us settle on a star rating.
