About this deal

Overall: Editor’s Choice! These inexpensive belay glasses have a sturdy frame, decent optics and are easy to put on with one hand. If you can take good care of these and are only looking to give an occasional gym belay, they might last long enough to be worth the low cost. Bigger nose pads also bring more stability when worn, while adjustable nose pads will conform to your nose and are great for a large variety of belayers. How to Use Belay Glasses…Correctly! Although the majority of the view when wearing belay glasses is taken up by the image presented by the prisms, the outer edge surrounding the glasses is still the peripheral image of one’s surroundings. The contrast in movement and imagery can lead to dizziness and vertigo in some people, although the time needed for this effect to take place varies from person to person. While this is by no means applicable to all climbers, having a moment of vertigo while belaying could be disastrous at worst and uncomfortable at best.

Like the other metal-framed glasses, the upside is adjustability. The nosepiece and arms can be bent to accomodate your face, although the arms only bend in the plane of the glasses (not up or down). The Belay Specs were reasonably comfortable but more noticeable on the face, especially on long belays.Larger prisms give you a bigger field of view. Smaller prisms are lighter. We measure the prism size for each pair. Larger prisms are easier to see more terrain, but limit peripheral vision and can become heavy. Belay glasses are supposed to make belaying easier and more comfortable. These factors are what make them worth buying and using. When looking for belay glasses a few years ago, the market was limited to a few options, most notably CU belay glasses, the original belay glasses, and a few competitors such as Belay Specs and Y&Y Belay Glasses. These days, however, there are many more options to choose from that range from basic models that are relatively cheap, to more engineered models that come with all sorts of accessories and a corresponding price. With the wide selection available, we have to ask ourselves if it’s worth buying a pair of belay glasses that cost as much as a new cam or whether a DIY pair will serve the purpose. As with most gear, you get what you pay for. Y&Y Classic Belay Glasses Case: The temples don’t really fold; they just bend in a bit. As a result, the case is bigger than most other cases on the market. It’s made of hard plastic and isn’t as compact or carry very well on a harness. The case only snaps shut, rather than having a secure zip closure. Between the larger case size and not 100% secure opening, going up a multi-pitch route with these glasses isn’t advised. Unless you need the adjustability of the metal frames, these will function just as well as the Classics for less money. They feel and look a little less premium, but they do their job well. Belay Specs

Watching your climber through these glasses is as enjoyable as watching a movie, yet without delaying your response time when the climber falls. Why Use Belay Glasses? Tembo utilized the same size optics as all the other glasses, with the exception of the Belaggles, so of course they offer the same field of view. The prisms are high quality though they don’t seem to be quite as good as some of the more expensive glasses. Unless you’re comparing them side-by-side you’ll never be able to tell the difference though. The lightweight stainless steel design allows for effortless shifting between fields of view as well as allowing for customizable adjustment to fit individual needs. The nosepiece is a single molded piece of flexible plastic. This is another excellent piece of design — the arched plastic conforms to your nose, which means that a wide range of testers found it comfortable. The most striking aspect of the Classic glasses is their minimalist design. They’re the least bulky of all the glasses we tested.

Belay Specs come with a color-customizable “keeper cord” (small lanyard) and a hard plastic case that snaps open and shut. The case also has a protruding loop for personal carabiner attachments. JNW Direct Belay Glasses Although their carrying case is inferior to the classics and the Plasfun, the superior case can be bought separately as needed and still come out cheaper than the competition.
