About this deal

Router bits are designed to serve three primary functions: To create wood joints, to plunge into the center of a piece for grooves or inlays, and to shape the edges of wood. As they effectively cut a 45° bevel edge, they are also commonly used to ‘bevel” the edges of two adjoining surfaces to create a mitre joint so that they meet to form a right angle. Using markings on the end of his ruler, Latta adjusts the fence to set the width of the rabbet (below left), and clamps the second end in place. As the bearing follows the object your are working on, the size of bearing dictates the depth of the cut, so for a different depth of cut you can simply change the bearing for a different size. To get a width of cut of 19mm, you would need the radius of the bearing, 5, plus the 19 = 24, so, an overall diameter of 48mm!

I prefer the standard base for routing little roundovers and such, but need the larger plunge base for the rabbeting.Another example of a specialist router bit is the biscuit cutting router bit used to cut biscuit joints in the absence of biscuit jointer. Whether you’re using single or stackable cutters, it’s important to use a router with the necessary horsepower, 1-1/2 hp as a minimum. The remaining five router bit types are all designed for the single purpose of shaping the sharp edges of lumber in different ways and for different purposes.

Unlike performing any of these tasks using other tools such as planes or saws, a router with the correct bit will give a 100% accurate and clean cut when used correctly. By burying a dado stack in a sacrificial fence, I can easily set both the width of the rabbet and the depth to the shoulder. All Whiteside’s cutting tips are hand brazed, precision ground and made from American industrial grade micro grain tungsten carbide. You can also cut a rabbet with a standard straight bit, using a straightedge (such as a board or level clamped to the workpiece) or an edge guide attachment to guide the router. How to Work With Natural-Edge Slabs Let Mother Nature be your co-designer as you build dazzling projects with wavy edges, bristly burrs, bark inclusions, and other “flaws” that give wood a look of unrefined beauty. While they’re hardly limited to a handful of “cut and dry” categories, the most commonly used router bits are generally used for grooving, joinery, or rounding over edges. While several other types of router bits (like the cove and roman ogee) are capable of making edge cuts for molding, molding bits save time and generate superior results. Running the cutter above negates these since the distance between the bottom of the bit and the table, which determines the tongue’s thickness, remains the same. As a result, I always—without exception—use a plywood guard, which as a perk also serves as a hold-down. The first thing I think I want to do is put a T Track on top of my soon-to-be crosscut sled's back fence so I can use a cool stop block with it.
