About this deal

Looking back at the books above, you’ll notice they share a thread of individuals caught up in oppressive, unreasonable systems — and that theme also animates “ Some Desperate Glory” by Emily Tesh. So it’s definitely not good that one of them has been found dead, and Sounder has to mind his footsteps as he rummages through the evidence, lest he trip under the unimpeded footsteps of the very Titans he’s trying to exonerate. Their friendship blossoms as they help each other, offering support, hard truths, and loving backup. It’s a little disappointing that they don’t seem to become smarter, more creative or more useful human beings, but that would be a different book.

The best recent science fiction, fantasy and horror – reviews

Three quarters of the problems they get asked to solve they can't, and shouldn't have to, and don't know how. For me, it’s time to hang my hat and take a much needed vacation, maybe quit the drink for a little while.

I highly recommend it to mystery fans, Noir fans, Speculative Fiction fans and anyone who is looking for a well-told tale that entertains you while making you think about how the world works. The reader is given plenty of hints that there’s more to this reality than the characters believe, but there are 500 pages to go before the mind-boggling reveal. Obviously, everything is connected; this is a story about a dead Titan, so it makes sense the man who invented T7 appears in it is right, but it also provides us with a deeper look at Cal and why he dislikes the Titans so much.

Titanium Noir by Nick Harkaway | Hachette UK

Why somebody would put a bullet in his skull is unclear, yet this is how the cynical gumshoe Cal Sounder discovers him at the beginning of Nick Harkaway’s slick novel Titanium Noir. But, I believe that since I did follow through, I should warn you that darkness lay ahead, and its shadow swallows what little light chooses to grace this godforsaken city. We already live in a world where, for the past fifteen years, billionaires have been growing richer while the rest of us have grown poorer and where some billionaires, especially in the tech sector in the USA, have marketed themselves as exceptional people who will shape all of our futures, whether we want them to or not. It is well-paced and full of amusing quips or heartbreaking revelations, and it was impossible to put down.Add in all the ordinary human vices and cops can be a mile away and to the side of the population they're supposed to protect. As the murder investigation intensifies, Cal begins to unravel the complicated threads of what should have been a straightforward case, and it becomes clear he's on the trail of a crime whose roots run deep into the dark heart of the world. Harkaway’s depiction of the world is visceral and believable, the inequalities of today’s society extrapolated brilliantly to include a separate race of apparently superior humans.
