Essentially, the book is a straightforward narrative aimed at that semi-mythical creature “the general reader”. I think that there is a line which historians shouldn’t cross, but it’s important to try to communicate the meaning of a story and to do that a certain amount of licence can be taken as long as there are other sources to draw on that allow you to build up that context. Detailing the witch-hunting that took place in a frontier town in Massachusetts during 1651, this is a darkly enthralling read. I walked out of the registry office to thunderous applause, thinking that in that moment I couldn’t be any happier.It does a good job of explaining why these accusations were born out of so much more than just religious zealotry and mass hysteria and had political, economic and psychological motivations at its root.
