The creators of Cooking Mama responded to PETA in a press release stating that "I would never put rat in my ratatouille", and indicated that not all of Mama's recipes are meat-based. There’s also a bit of room for creativity in some dishes; the last step in making sushi balls is to choose your favourites and arrange them as you like in a handsome presentation box. A serious lack of challenge means it won’t be for everyone, but kids and foodies with a taste for cute cuisine and simple, stylus-based mini-games will find plenty to like in Mama’s latest culinary adventure. Cooking Mama is a cooking simulation video game that compiles a lot of mini-game into one cookery setting.

The actual in-game 3D models aren’t particularly impressive, and apart from a muted stereoscopic effect there’s nothing here that wouldn’t be possible on a DS — but what it lacks in technical prowess it certainly makes up for in charm.

It is the start of the Cooking Mama series, with 4 more main series titles on DS and Nintendo 3DS, two spin offs on Wii, and a spin off on 3DS. This system must be updated to the latest system software and connected to the internet with automatic downloads enabled, and it must have enough storage to complete the download. Cooking Mama 2 invites you to use the DS stylus as an all-in-one cooking utensil as you conjure up 80 new recipes as well as some old favourites.

The player's performance is rated when each dish is finished, based on the average result of each minigame.

Two new modes: Friends and Foods of the World , in which the player battles against 10 foreign friends in a cook-off and Friends and Food, in which the player battles head-to-head against someone in multiplayer mode.
