About this deal

We exchanged on a number of themes and topics throughout the hour but first of all, Fr. James DiLuzio asked if I had a question for them. So I asked how they as Catholics felt about the book. There were a few who were dubious before reading it. But I was relieved to find that the book—although it might make some readers think about the role of the Catholic Church during its long history—was not perceived as anti-Catholic at all. Very well written series about the Huguenot banishment from France . The book is written through the minds and eyes of the Depelch family. All of their trails, dangers, losses and struggles. The history is very accurate the family is very interesting. I enjoyed reading them and since I have read a lot of the History of the Jewish people there were many close and comparable parts to the books that were familiar. This trilogy covers about 12 years of a very important period in both European history as well as the Reformation era. Merchants of Virtue : Montauban—a sanctuary of peace and promise for Jacob Delpech. But as shadows of intolerance grow, how far will one family go to hold onto their beliefs and each other?

Firstly, the action takes place in the very different world of the late 17th century. Secondly, religion was held hostage by men of power who used it for their political means, not to promote faith. Thirdly, the focus was on the story and one family’s flight from persecution and their trials and tribulations along the way. So that was a relief, and I must say that during the writing, it never even occurred to me that it could be anti-Catholic in any way. In fact, I spent many years going to the Catholic Church in France where my first son was baptised and confirmed! Part of my ancestry is French Huguenot. Eventually some of the family migrated to the U.S. I found the story to be very compelling and a great read."★★★★★My major issue I have is the events taking place, and the attitudes herein, reflect more of the woke-isms of modern day than the late 17th century actually exhibited. Not nearly as much as those novels completed in 2019 & 2020, but enough linking it more with today’s Leftist morays than the periods realities. Plot-wise I am unsure that every boat and ship on the waters was so very fragile and the ubiquitous "pauper" villain appeared in the most unexpected places - too many of them.

You’ll adore this brilliantly researched historical saga, because everyone loves heart-warming tales of family loyalty and a fight for survival against the odds. Despite having some Huguenot ancestry I knew virtually nothing about the period known as the 9 years war. The breath of the story and the description of the perils and indignities suffered by Huguenots are new to me and were illuminating.A well written, highly researched, historical drama. It leaves you wanting to find out more about this time period and the major issues in it." ★★★★★ I enjoyed the story with its buccaneers, NY stories, and Switzerland & Germany travels during the time of Louis XIV and beginning of William of Orange’s reign (1688). A well written, highly researched, historical drama. It leaves you wanting to find out more about this time period and the major issues in it."★★★★★
