He has a huge shiny nose and a face that shows expression and feeling perfectly, as do the other characters in the book. David Melling is one of my favourite picture book author/illustrators and I absolutely love Hugless Douglas. When the expected happy ending rolls around, any possible mawkishness is tempted by the upbeat style.

This got three stars because there's a sentence in the book where Douglas says "Give us a hug" and that's just bad English. tales where the protagonist goes on an adventure, ticking off the characteristics that don't quite match up with their goal.
