Different Class scooped the Mercury Prize in 1996 – triumphing from a field that featured Oasis’ all-conquering Morning Glory and the Manics’ phenomenal comeback LP Everything Must Go. Something Changed' is a really neat track from Pulp, and their psychotic, mysterious, Bond-esque theme in 'I Spy' is still one of the band's best - all these years later. On the heels of such excitement, anticipation for Different Class ran high, and not only does it deliver, it blows away all their previous albums, including the fine His 'n' Hers. one of the most acclaimed concept albums of all time, 'the wall' from 1979 is renowned as roger waters' rock opera dealing with.

Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. Formed in Sheffield in 1978, and with enough ex-members to form several more outfits, Pulp had released four albums by the summer of 1995. These two major turns in fortune provided all the momentum necessary to ensure the band’s fifth album, Different Class, would be, commercially, their definitive release. Be aware that even sealed copies of this may have vinyl that looks and plays like it been thrown through a hedge.Similarly, Jarvis Cocker's lyrics take two themes, sex and social class, and explore a number of different avenues in bitingly clever ways. The album was a critical and commercial success, entering the UK Albums Chart at number one and winning the 1996 Mercury Music Prize. From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener Mis-Shapes and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of Disco 2000 ) to the aching ballad Underwear and the startling sexual menace of I Spy, Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound. Following the recent renewal of interest in Britpop comes the reissue of Pulp's widely revered 1995 LP 'Different Class'. Coming from Cocker, who made secondhand clothes and music glamorous, the song is undeniably affecting and exciting, much like Different Class itself.

There are definitely Britpop bands I prefer - Oasis, for one - but I do think Different Class by Pulp is the genre's definitive moment. Mis-shapes' and 'Pencil Skirt' is yet more of Cocker at his most debauched, but it makes for some pretty catchy tracks, with 'Underwear' proving the same. Alluding to society and the British class system, 'Different Class' was definitely of its time, but still resonates today. In doing so he marked the begining of the down fall of the self proclaimed King of Pop and kiddie fiddle at large.Island/UMC did a really nice deluxe 25th version of His N' Hers in 2019, white vinyl, Abbey Road mastering, sounded great.
