About this deal

He makes clear that he is talking about the kind of depression that is ‘stress-related’ (as opposed to bipolar or other types of depression which are part of a person’s chemical make-up), which is to say that it is caused by overloading the system repeatedly until a fuse blows. At the end of episode one, the incident that gives the rest of the series its narrative impetus takes place.

The Curse review – a sublime crime caper with an unfeasibly The Curse review – a sublime crime caper with an unfeasibly

Apparently a pattern of good days and bad days is normal in depression recovery, but if you overdo it on the good days, the pattern becomes exaggerated, you’ll have more bad days and take longer to recover. Essentially, he argues, that depressives 'catch' depression by leading lives which are too demanding. Cantopher also goes into herbal treatments and mentions Electroconvulsive Therapy as a treatment reserved for the most severe cases of Depression.

If you're feeling crushed by the world and the a-hole in your head just won't shut up and just getting to the giant pile of Things To Do seems impossible, or you just can't shake feeling awful, you might be well served by trying this book, especially if you can't/don't want to get to a therapist. A fruity back-of-the-throat baritone with loose consonants bouncing off a lolling lower lip and splashing everywhere, like a cockney Bernard Ingham – it’s a thick extra layer of funny on an already very funny script, and it’s the sound of a man at the top of his character-comedy game.

Depressive Illness: The Curse of the Strong - SPCK Publishing

Now, how much this matters to each individual reader is left as an exercise to them -- if you're inclined to believe what you read, this book is -tremendously- helpful, whether you're depressed or (maybe even more so) if you have someone in your life who is. Quite short, and at times a little simplistic, but a valuable book nevertheless which I shall certainly dip into many more times, just as I already read some sections several times along the way. This is one of the many trials sufferers from the illness have to face: people looking at them knowingly and saying, 'Oh, yes, I've often had that. Oh, and remember to relax every now and then, because modern life places stress on your limbic system, which is the ultimate cause of depression. There’s a lovely nod to the old Reservoir Dogs/Taking of Pelham One Two Three motif where criminals assign themselves colours – based on snooker balls, in this case – and all the right tunes by the Cult, Talk Talk, Talking Heads and the The on the soundtrack.Depression is given such a profound light, that the very people who suffer from it can finally see it for what it is and accept the help that they've been denying themselves for so long. The author and doctor, Tim Cantopher, has a brilliant no-nonsense voice, and more to the point, that voice comes from a place of sound understanding. For those with a deeper interest in the 'biological psychiatry' vs 'anti-biological psychiatry' debate consider comparing and contrasting the works of Peter Kramer and Peter Breggin. The author is a British psychiatrist, and while his use of British slang can be confusing and foreign to American English speakers sometimes, the overall message remains strong and intact. I think this is all part of Cantopher’s rhetoric to convince the reader that they are not weak or to blame for their illness, but frankly, any scientific “facts” that you come across in his book I would check elsewhere.

While most counsel 'taking it easy' and doing as much as you feel like, Cantopher uses his own patients' experiences to explain the exhaustion that knocks you sideways (dumping you like a big unexpected wave in the surf) as well as the ups and downs of the initial stages following diagnosis. The book is short, a total of 114 pages, as are the chapters, which is intentional as a symptom of depression is having a limited concentration span. Although this sort of thing is common within the medical model, I don’t believe there is sufficient evidence to claim that depression is a physical rather than a mental illness; nor do I believe that in almost all cases it could be diagnosed with a lumbar puncture showing reduced levels of serotonin and noradrenaline. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads.The book moves from an understanding of the illness, through the causes and concludes with practical ways to move forward (which include medication and sensible coping mechanisms) and leave the illness behind. Depressive Illness: The Curse of the Strong was Dr Cantopher's first, and remains his bestselling, book: his other titles include Toxic People: Dealing with dysfunctional relationships (Sheldon Press, 2017), S tress-Related Illness: Advice for people who give too much (Sheldon Press, 2019) and Overcoming Anxiety: Without Fighting It (Sheldon Press, 2019). He literally breaks down the symptoms of the depression, talks about having a good day and a bad day and that it’s not you not getting better it is part of recovery! Depressive Illness and Work - Didlaw

Knihu doplňuje aj viacero obrázkov/grafov/tabuliek, ktoré sú vizuálne často jednoducho prehľadné a vždy vysvetlené. This book is well written and, though I've not finished the whole book, I've found it to be helpful.I first developed severe depression after pushing myself too hard during my final year at university. While I don't seem to suffer from depression generally, I did have a terrible bout of it a few Januarys back. It is fortunate that we have people like Dr Tim Cantopher fighting the corner of those with depression.
