About this deal

Beside him, his father moaned. Slowly he opened his eyes and looked at his son without recognition. The first book in Michelle Paver's hugely popular Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, Wolf Brother is a gripping and original adventure story. Magical, imaginative, vividly-told and rich in detail, young readers will find Torak's tale completely engrossing.

I have just finished Wolf Brother and I love it. When Fa dies, Torak of the Wolf Clan thinks he has been left alone to defeat the demon bear who killed his Fa. But when Torak finds Renn and Wolf, he discovers he is not alone in this dangerous quest. Just before Fa died, he made Torak swear to either find the Mountain of the World Spirit and defeat the savage bear, or die trying. Because of course, Torak is the listener... First, as gently as he could, he removed his father’s beaver-hide boots, and drew a circle on each heel to mark the name-soul. Then he drew another circle over the heart, to mark the clan-soul. This wasn’t easy, as his father’s chest was scarred from an old wound, so Torak only managed a lopsided oval. He hoped that would be good enough. Six thousand years ago. Evil stalks the land. Only twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion can defeat it. Their journey together takes them through deep forests, across giant glaciers, and into dangers they never imagined. ny scarlet veins, and at the centers, the fathomless dark. ‘What do you meant’ he whispered. ‘What-’ Suddenly death was upon them. A frenzy of claws. A welter of sound to make the ears bleed. In a heartbeat, the creature had smashed their shelter to splinters. In a heartbeat, it had ripped a ragged wound in his father’s side. Then it was gone, melting into the Forest as silently as mist. His wound was so deep that as Torak clumsily stanched it with beard-moss, he saw his father’s guts glistening in the firelight. He had to grit his teeth to keep from retching. He hoped Fa didn’t notice - but of course he did. Fa was a hunter. He noticed everything.

Before they get to the Mountain of the World Spirit, the trio must locate the three pieces of the Nanuak; objects the World Spirit has imbued with power. The Nanuak pieces are found in a river, a cave, and in the hand of a dead man. The book has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, French, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Japanese, German, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Serbian, Hungarian, Latvian, Danish, Indonesian, Romanian, Icelandic, Turkish, Slovenian and Faroese ( Faroe Islands). But what could you do? said the small part of his mind that could still think straight. Fa knew this would happen. That’s why he sent you for water. He knew it was coming for him...Torak is offered the chance to prove his innocence by dueling Hord. He defeats Hord by tipping a pot of broth onto a fire: the rising steam blinds his opponent. Fin-Kedinn and Saeunn, the Mage of the Raven Clan, hail Torak as the “Listener” foretold in a clan prophecy. The prophecy describes the Listener as someone who “talks with silence”—Torak’s dog whistle—and “fights with air” (the blinding steam).
