About this deal

There are many different options for storage. Some are more aesthetically pleasing and others are more functional. You might have more than one storage option. For example, if you have your grandmother’s old straight needles with the size etched into them then you might store those in a beautiful vase on your craft table. Then you might have a big storage area that holds the majority of your needles and cables. And you might also have a set of knitting needles in an organized storage caddy that goes with you wherever you go. The main thing is that you want to be able to easily access whatever knitting needles you need for a project.

There are two different measurements you need to know for knitting needles: the length and the needle size. Knitting Needle Lengths Interchangeable knitting needles are a specific type of circular knitting needles. With regular circular needles, you’ll buy a bunch of different sized needles as well as different sized cables. An interchangeable knitting needle set allows you to detach the cable from the rest of the needle so that you can mix-and-match your sizes. Beginner knitters would serve themselves well to get a set of interchangeable knitting needles. The term chunky or bulky is used to describe a #5 size yarn. It’s about the size of two strands of light worsted weight (#3) held together. Using the recommended needle size US 9 -11 [5.5-8mm] – it has a gauge of 12 to 15 stitches to knit 4”. Super Bulky

Which knitting needles are best for you?

Each material grips the yarn a bit differently. The yarn will slide around a lot on metal needles. It won’t slide nearly as much on wooden needles. Since you don’t want to drop your stitches, the material can matter a lot. But it’s all about what you’re comfortable with. Try different types of knitting needles to see what material works best for you. Ready to Buy Some Knitting Needles? Important note: I don’t believe there is a single best needle. All knitters are different. If someone tells you, this is the best needle, then they are always talking about their own preferences. The way you hold your hands and the tension you apply to your yarn matter just as much as the yarn itself and pattern you are working with. That, of course, does not explain the conundrum of the US needle sizes. Why don’t they follow the Imperial system? To be quite honest, nobody really knows! It remains a fact, however, that from around 1900 US manufacturers started selling their own needle gauges – following no system at all. Or rather, the actual sizes followed (more or less) the Imperial system but the numbers were rising, much like the metric system popular in mainland Europe. In our webshop we have also listed all our sizes in us sizes so you can follow American patterns without problems and at the same time get the best results with the right knitting needles! You can also find a large selection of knitting needles, where you can make a particularly good deal. A knitting set is for you who want all your needs covered. Buy your knitting needles here in our webshop and save money on good quality! Of course, new materials (like celluloid) might also explain the departure from the SWG (as they required different machines and thus resulted in different sized needles). One also has to keep in mind that around 1910, commercial flights across the Atlantic were not available, and neither were telephone calls possible. Unlike today, knitters around the world were much less connected internationally and the world moved much slower and still a bit in isolation.

If you’re a crocheter then you know that a crochet hook has a shaft. It’s the part of the hook that is flat instead of round. On knitting needles, there’s a tapered part and then there’s the shaft which is not tapered. You don’t want your stitches to fall off of the knitting needles. Therefore, they need to sit up on the shaft of the needle. Cable At the very end of this guide, we have to talk about the length of your needles. Knitting needles don’t only come in different sizes, but also in different lengths. Today I’m pausing this project to consider the joys of working with chunky, bulky, and super bulky yarn. If knitting with big yarn and big needles isn’t something you usually do, I’d like to push you out of your comfort zone, and into the super cushy zone. One important point is that you won’t remove knitting needles from a project that’s in the works. Sometimes crocheters take a hook out of one project to use it on another. But with knitting that can easily lead to the first project falling apart. Therefore, if you are going to have different WIPs going at the same time, you’ll need different needles in each of them. With interchangeables, you might have the needle part you need in an existing project so you can’t use it for another. If that sounds like you, then you’ll either need multiple sets of interchangeable knitting needles or you might want to try sets of circular knitting needles so you can use different sizes in different projects. If you’re a crocheter then you know that crochet hooks are measured in sizes. As described above, a worsted weight yarn pattern might call for a size I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook. Often, that number is written / etched right on to the crochet hook. So you can look at the hook and see what size it is.Note: There are a needles made of natural materials as well. Most specifically bone and horn (like porcupine needles). As these are not readily available in western knitting shops, I am not going to discuss them here. The best Knitting needle size for beginners

For circular knitting needles, the distinction is mainly a matter of preference. The longer the needle body, the more you can use the needles as leverage but the heavier they are. And of course, whenever you are knitting in the round, the stiff length of the needle itself defines the minimum diameter you can knit with these comfortably – except you are using the magic loop technique (e.g. you cannot knit a 10-inch circle with needles that are 4 in long each). How are knitting needles sized – a short history Knitting needles come in many different sizes. There is a metric system, the UZ size, and the UK size. It’s probably just as confusing as shoe sizes. But don’t worry. You’ll mostly find the US size printed somewhere, even if it’s a European needle and vice versa. Also, while the name for the sizes varies, the actual physical size is the same. So, it doesn’t matter if you knit with a size US size 3, UK size 10 or European 3.25mm needle. I feel it’s important that beginners experience a feeling of success– otherwise you’ll get frustrated or bored very soon. And that’s not good, eh? anyway that is just my experience I hope it helps someone and thank you again Norman for providing such a wonderful space for knitters! Reply

Your personal tension: Are you a tight or loose knitter? Your knitting style and even the needle material (wood vs metal) will have a huge influence on your gauge. Think of how Apple forced unique chargers and cables on their customers for two decades. Miss Lambert probably called her needle gauge “ Standard Filière” for very similar reasons – distinction. The Singer Corporation famously heralded this change towards international marketing around that time with their sewing machines ( source) with a kind of success that would dominate the industry for the whole century to come. Again, please understand that these are only general recommendations. Two different companies might call their yarn DK weight but that doesn’t mean that both should be knitted with needle size 6 for the best results. Does knitting needle length matter?

Explaining U.S. knitting needle sizes is a complicated topic and we have to delve a bit into history: With the popularization of knitting in the UK in the 18th century and the industrialization, the shift from handmade tools to mass-produced steel needles occurred. Needles were often also called wires because, by then, most dpns were indeed made out of durable steel wire. And thus they were measured in accordance with the standard wire gauge (SWG). fairly recently I found “Pyrm” needles and they have a slightly bulbous end that realllly is helpful for not splitting the yarn or letting the stitch slip off the end – I looove them -they are white, which really helps when using dark colored yarns, they have a matte feel and are ergonomically shaped like triangles so your hands don’t cramp- the cables are made of some sort of magic and they don’t have a “memory” so they don’t hold the shape that they have been stored in etc .. anyway … they are super for beginners and advanced knitters as well. A special sort of double-pointed needle is the cable needle, which can be used to temporarily hold stitches when knitting cable patterns. The ideal length of your knitting needlesAre you ready to start knitting? If so then the first thing you need to figure out is what kind of supplies you’ll need to get started. Obviously, you’ll need knitting needles. Pretty soon, choosing your needles for a project will be second nature. But as you get started, it can feel a little daunting. This guide tells you all there is to know about different types of knitting needles. After all, the more knowledge you have, the easier it will be to make decisions about your supple needs. I personally usually use the European system the most, as it is the clearest, and I see a lot of patterns agreeing with me. If a pattern says “size 5” it can be quite confusing because you might not know if that’s a UK size, a US size, or an old US size.
