About this deal

In Sabray, Luttrell befriends a man named Mohammad Gulab, the son of the wise elder who runs the village. With Gulab and his father’s help, Luttrell is hidden and protected from the Taliban forces. Luttrell later learns that the Taliban are careful to respect the Pashtuns’ communities for fear of losing valuable allies. Gulab’s father carries a message to an American military base two miles away, explaining that Luttrell is alive. a b Showcase Cinemas (January 27, 2014). "Lone Survivor". Showcase Cinemas. However, I must have been naive to expect the story to be written as a narrative versus as a sort of long conversation with the writer. The book is full of very far right Conservative, anti-Liberal rhetoric, which, these days, I'm getting a bit tired of all the political hate, from both sides. I understand that should maybe be expected from some military guys but I felt it severely distracted from the story. I appreciate and agree the sacrifice anyone in the military makes needs to be remembered, which is part of why I wanted to read the book. But the author so clearly expected the "liberal media" to criticize him that his criticism of the very far left Liberals (though he seemed to expect this of all liberals) and defense of his and the military's actions pervaded the entire book. I ended up being taken out of the story every time he would do this, even though I agree there are sometimes necessary evils and tough choices made in the time of war. a b c d e f g Michael Cummings; Eric Cummings (January 10, 2014). Lone Survivor (book) - Wikipedia

Several reviewers criticized Lone Survivor for focusing more on its action scenes than on characterization. In his review for The Star-Ledger, Stephen Whitty wrote, "This is the sort of bare-bones story that well served plenty of World War II movies once, and it would work here, if Berg had the sense to develop these men as characters, first. But we don't really get to know any of them, or what they might bring personally to this life-or-death emergency." [98] Rafer Guzman of Newsday wrote, "The movie seems more concerned with military-style action than with telling us who these fallen heroes really were." [99] Didn't read the print version. I can say that the narrator really gave it some personality. It wasn't always convincing but overall he added to my experience. When I read the book, I knew instantly that this would be a perfect movie for [Berg]. His strengths as a director are in taking an audience into a closed world ... He loves to take an audience into a world and show them the details but then hit them with this emotional wallop. The book has this incredibly emotional story of brotherhood and sacrifice, and then ultimately, in the story with Gulab, this grace and humanity even in the midst of war.

Some reviewers have criticized Kevin Collins' "fake Texas accent". I am from Oklahoma and I thought he did a great job! He acted as a consultant, detailing to Berg his eyewitness account of the events that unfolded during Operation Red Wings. [3] Berg later embedded with a Navy SEAL team—becoming the first civilian to do so—and lived with them for a month in Iraq while he continued writing the screenplay. [27] [28] In re-enacting the injuries and deaths of the fallen Navy SEAL servicemen, Berg relied on Luttrell's eyewitness accounts from the book, as well as autopsy reports of the deceased and after-action reports. [29] The United States Navy provided incident reports related to the mission, [25] as well as archival military training footage, which is shown during the film's opening credits sequence. [27] :1 Still photographs shown during the opening credits sequence were taken from Richard D. Schoenberg's war photography book The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday: Making Navy SEALs. [3] During filming, there were some dialogue changes in comparison to Berg's script, as the filmmaker occasionally encouraged the actors to improvise their lines. Luttrell, Danny, Mikey, and Axe are deployed on a secret mission known as Operation Redwing. As a part of this mission, they’re sent into the Hindu Kush mountains in search of a dangerous Taliban leader named Ben Sharmak. Sharmak is responsible for killing many American soldiers, and he commands a vast army of Taliban troops. Because of Sharmak’s power, it’s imperative that Luttrell and his teammates have the element of surprise—in an ordinary fight, they’d be impossibly outnumbered. Sharkey, Betsy (December 24, 2013). The equipment enabled Schleissler to oversee every shot of the film in the EC3 trailer.
